Driving around town in "E" "D" or "S" I rarely get into 4th gear and the "Eco" light is on a lot. Maxidot shows revs. at around 1500 or so.

 

If I select "M" and change gears myself I am able to get into 6th gear and occasionally 7 the revs. hover at just over 1000 but I never get the "Eco" light come on. So where is the economy. Maxidot tells me my average mpg is 42.5 which I was surprised about and suspect "Max" is, err, slightly over optimistic.

 

Any thoughts?

You have Active Cylinder Technology,  why not just get some miles on the new car, get to know it,

drive one day or journey in D', the same another day in 'S;. another in 'E' and another in Manual and see what the maxidot shows or the actual fuel use is.

I suspect that there's minimal fuel improvement to be had under 1500 rpm.
