Yes cranks fine I've got fuel up to filter housing when ignition is turned on.

does the rev counter register engine speed when cranking?

What have you used to scan for fault codes?

Just a basic code reader.all I have got at the min.going to try and get hold of a better system tomorrow.

something like VCDS or a better quality scanner may reveal more specific codes it may be throwing, otherwise it could be many things which makes it hard to diagnose over the internet.

You say you have fuel pressure at the filter so the lift pump is probably ok. Does the engine sound fine when cranking? like it has normal compression? maybe check the timing belt by removing the top cover?

Has it been misfueled maybe?

Have you checked all the fuel lines are secure on the filter and the tandem pump, air leaks can be a pain and a loose hose can suck air in and then take a fair amount of cranking to re prime the fuel system

I'll see what diagnosis kit I can get hold of tomorrow. Has definitely got the right fuel in. All hose appear ok but will double check.engine sounds fine and I have had top timing cover off all looks fine no slack or damage. I did run the fuel tank very low on Saturday but have done around 40 miles since I topped up tank. I have cranked engine over quite a few times for periods of about 40-50 seconds tonight whilst looking at it.how long does it normally take to bleed up if air locked

If you have done that amount of cranking I would expect it to have started if it had got a little air in it presuming its not sucking air in constantly.

Do you have the style of filter with the thermostat on top with the mickey mouse clip (looks like a plastic 'T' piece?

No its the metal canister with a ring of small bolts and four pipes held on with spring type hose clips. I've had the car for two years and it's never faulted before and last night when I drove it showed no warning signs.

I'm not sure what else to suggest at this point other than to see if you can get any codes out of it.

Have you checked the injector wiring loom connector is seated correctly? (side of the head I think)

tandem fuel pump failure is a possibility, sometimes it can lead to fuel in the oil or oil in the fuel so checking the oil level and giving it a whiff or drawing off some fuel into a clear container to make sure its not black is something you could do to narrow down the issues.

I'm sure others will contribute and cover anything obvious I may have missed

I have plugged in car with a better scanner and it's come up with p1517 main relay malfunction? But can only find one relay in fuse box under bonnet?

  • Author

Hi I have been doing some more checks. I am getting codes p1517 and p2146. So after reading some other posts I have unplugged the injectors one by one and tried to start the car. Still no joy,do I need to reset faults each time or could this be wiring.

The injector code could be a symptom of the first code, have you any means to test a relay? a 12v supply and a multi meter that can measure ohms?

I would test the one you have found in the engine bay but there may be others lurking above the drivers footwell

Hi thanks for the reply.only just managed to get back to car due to work. I have located relays under dash and tested what I think is the fuel pump relay. This appears to be OK with continuity and no resistance. Can anybody offer any advise please.
