Replacing our Scout with another one or not...?

Featured Replies

So the lease is up soon (well end may next year) on our MY15 Scout and due to build times were looking at what to go for next to make a decision maybe over xmas of the way forwards. Its our second car (i have company diesel vRS) and hence it 'only' does between 8000-1000miles a year tops; we don't have tonnes of capital, or time to tinker/worry about older cars hence i still think new car lease is the way to go for us, on something like a 6 or 9 + 35 month term. The current 'bog standard' other than metallic paint, Scout, has been a really good car as we live out in the sticks a bit and do like the AWD and relative luxuries the Scout offers as standard at the netted cost (including deposit) of 248 per month it has cost over 36 months.

The question is what we go for next, Skoda / O3 or something else. SWMBO is the main driver so has the main call on it, but we have a few outline criteria - firstly to keep 4x4 / AWD capability ideally, secondly to retain at least the features/luxury/smartness of the current Scout, thirdly to be be at least but possibly more powerful then current car (can be petrol or diesel, although its shorter runs so possibly back to petrol - something we didn't consider with the Scout?). It doesn't strictly need to be SUV or raised up.  Finally budget, the deals aren't as good as 3 years ago as far as i can tell and our criteria is possibly slightly more, hence we're working on something like 2000-2500 deposit and upto 280-ish a month tops.

The current cars in the list appear to be limited to VAG but would welcome any thoughts outside this but my reckoning the O3.5 is offering the best still;

O3.5 Scout 184 DSG

O3.5 vRS 184 DSG 4x4 (no 245 4x4 or even 230 4x4 option :-( )

Karoq 2.0 TDI SE Tech

Seat Ateca Xcellence 4Drive

Seat cupra ST 4Drive

Golf R (estate) DSG

Liking the kodiaq but to hit any of the about criteria blows the budget (although sportline or future vRS would be nice).

We'd originally crossed off the last two assuming the insurance would add significantly to the monthly cost, but having run a comparison for some reason the Golf R is less for us to insurance than the current Scout? I kinda don't want a another vRS on the drive (we just about got away with the Scout and the vRS not looking too like his and hers) and having not seen the Karoq in flesh i'm uncomfortable with taking a decision on that! The sensible-ish decision would appear to be another but more powerful Scout with the added features it would now have but i fear missing an opportunity to have something different for 3 years.

Any thoughts or other idea's welcomed?

Cheers

J

Superb 4x4?

Had slightly overlooked it, i do like the current Superb, certainly the sportline but think budget would suggest be SE L or L&K tops, and i don't really know how these specs compare to say the Scout or vRS, certainly not between the octavia and superb anyway. None of the cars are small but this one maybe a bit big for SWMBO and i'd need to possibly get her a new broom for sweeping up the glass from all the minor scrapes she'd get into. But seriously certainly one to have a look at the dealers.

4 x 4 vRS diesel.

A Karoq will offer the cheapest leasing option. Spec is great (even on base SE Tech model) and space is almost as good as the Scout (more headroom, less rear legroom, smaller boot but still big). The Karoq is a little bland to look at, but so is most of the Skoda range.

Its the cheapest of options I've looked at but tending to shy away from his and hers, and missing the possible opportunity of something different to my car (albeit 4x4) - if it was petrol 4x4 then i'd probably be more swayed.

Interesting re the legroom - our kids are getting bigger so although less stuff (buggies/nappies etc) to cart around the rear legroom is about right in the Octavia. Is the karoq smaller than say Tiguan? Would like to see one out there ideally but this isn't going to happen until probably too late next year.

Clearly we lean towards Skoda/VAG here, but I can't see much else out there that is in the same kind of league for money to spec.

I have sat inside a new Alteca which should have extremely similar interior dimernsions to the Karoq. I am 6ft4", and within the Alteca I can sit behind my own driving position with my knees slightly touching the front seat backs. I can get comfortable, but legroom is definately less than my Octavia, where there is ~2" gap between my knees and the front seats. Regarding headroom, the Alteca (Karoq) has a good inch or two advantage over the Octavia. My head brushes the headlining within the Octavia, but there was clear space in the SEAT. Boot size will also be good, but the Ocatavia's Octavia's is huge.

The Alteca/Karaq are a foot shorter than the Octavia and thair wheelbase is 4-5cm shorter. This impacts most on boot space but it seems a little legroom is missing also. The Tiguan is a little larger than the Karoq in length and wheelbase so should be a bit closer to the Octavia.

In reality the Karoq will sit four 6-footers front and back with ease and have enough boot room for most tasks. It will however be a little bit smaller inside than an Octavia Estate / Scout.  As Dealers do not have any Karoq's on display yet, perhaps try an Alteca for size.

We were looking to a new Karoq, to buy not lease, to replace our 64 reg 30,000 mile Scout DSG but looking at what we would have to fork out for the gain we will stick to the scout for longer. It's just such a good car with so much power. Not much to touch it for the price and economy really, suits me.:)

In an almost identical situation, our 2 year lease on a Scout ends next April and my wife also covers around 8,000 miles per year.

We pay £200 per month (inc. deposit), these deals simply aren't out there anymore.

We're thinking Kodiaq. The SE L offers improved spec over our base spec Octavia Scout.

We want 4x4 and she has enjoyed the jacked up ride height, 7 seats appeal too.

Diesel isn't dead but it is dying so we're looking at the 150PS 1.4 TSi. For some reason Skoda haven't launched a petrol Scout on the UK.

There are some pretty good lease deals out there but might buy this time, come April the early examples will be a year old and nicely depreciated.
