Yeti winter tyres option

Featured Replies

Doe anyone run winter tyres or wheels on a skoda yeti looking for advice and different combinations like steels and winters or just swapping the tyres my preferred option is steels and winters

also diameter I’m on 17s at the moment but from what I’ve read the preferred option is 16s with winters on

I’m in no hurry to take the plunge as I’m not away to next winter

oh not that it makes much difference  but I’m towing a caravan too so if anyone is on winter tyres towing a caravan that would also be great

thankyou

I used a spare set of 17" alloys which I picked up on ebay for £100.

Had a set of Semperit winter tyres fitted to them for a further £140 and ran them for 3 winters with no issue.

4 new tyres for £140! Or was that each?

That’s interesting never thought of the eBay issue will take a look did you have the TPMS system on your skoda

thanks for the reply

If the TPMS is reset after fitting the tyres it will be no problem.
It works by monitoring the speed of each wheel using the ABS system.
Nothing in the wheels.

I run 205/55R16 winter tyres, because I want to have the option to fit snow chains (there's a whole section in the Yeti owner's manual about what tyre sizes can be used with snow chains).  My OEM Dunlops were worn close to the limit last autumn but there was plenty of tread left on the winters (even allowing for the higher minimum tread depth recommended for winter tyres) so I left them on last March, rather than change back to the summer tyres.  They've been absolutely fine in terms of grip.  The better water-clearing performance of a winter tyre seems to be beneficial year-round in Scotland(!)

Now that the winter tyres are close to needing to be replaced, I'm planning to get Crossclimates in the 16" size.  That will save having to swap wheels twice a year, and will still allow me to use snow chains should the need arise.

I use steel 16" wheels, again with the use of snow chains in mind: I don't mind cheap steelies getting scratched up by chains.  (There's also an argument that wheels used in hard winter conditions are also more at risk of coming in to unintentional contact with potentially damaging objects hidden in the snow and slush.)

Thanks very much for your reply it’s good to know and confirms along the lines I was thinking and plus you’ve answered the question about snow chains

Thanks for your reply pleased to know that issue will be sorted

I bought my 110bhp 2.0 diesel Yeti in June 2014. It runs 225 50 R17 on alloys as standard.

In October 2014 I ordered from /www.tyreleader.co.uk , 4 x 7 Jx16" steel rims with Nokian WR D3 215/60 R16 99H XL .

Cost was about £420 delivered from Germany? to a friendly garage who fitted and balanced the tyres onto the rims for £40.

They have not seen snow but have been a very comfortable and secure winter ride and shed heavy water with ease.

A few weeks ago I towed the 250 miles from Essex to Merseyside when moving home. I ran the tyres at max recommended pressure on the fuel flap + 0.2 bar. [normal practice with winter tyres] Both car and van were fully loaded and the van towed very well. I got just under 42mpg on the trip, but this was with a low profile eriba weighing in at an estimated 1150kg. This figure is comparable with my summer mpg.

Thanks Colin

thats great info it’s really nice to know someone is doing what I’m thinking and very interesting about the towing I will have a look at tyre leader , I drove home from work the other day in slippery conditions with only summer tyres I was truly amazed how much grip there was

thanks Gavin

4 used tyres, though each had 8mm tread remaining so almost new.

I run Michelin Alpins in the same size as my 'summer' tyres. I find them excellent and the best winter tyre I've run (also tried Pirelli and Dunlop's winter ranges, on other Skodas).

Similar to above; I picked up a 2nd set of Yeti 17" alloy wheels via eBay, then ordered my winter tyres online - think they were via Camskill. Bought in 2014 for my first Yeti and still running well - wear rate has been very good indeed.

I'd previously run both a 110 TDi (2WD) and 140 TDi (4WD) on 16" steel rims / 205/55/16 winter tyres (November - March). These were excellent in the snow, although the twice yearly change-over became a bit of a chore. I then swopped to 225/50/17 Michelin Cross Climate tyres (on the OEM alloys) and these have proved to be a good all year round option. I have ventured into quite deep snow (in Derbyshire) and they seemed to offer 90% of the ability of the full winter tyres.

I understand the Goodyear 4 seasons are a bit better than the Cross Climates in the snow, so may well opt for a set of these, when the Cross Climates are worn out (~50% worn after ~20k miles).

I have no realistic option (with my other car) than to run 15" steel wheels / winter tyres (November - March), as the OEM tyres are ludicrously sized (215/40/17) and all seasons options are somewhat limited, and costly!

Thanks for the review on the tyres at the moment I’m going to go with your eBay option as that seams to suit me best

I run Michelin Cross climate plus tyres all year round at the moment.  They work very nicely in snow I've found, and also handle a bit of mud on forest roads quite nicely too.  They are a little bit noisier than the Falken ze914 they replaced, and the dry grip is a little less (you wouldn't notice this unless really pressing on in the dry).  All in all, they are very good tyre.

That said, the fronts need replacing really, and I've just ordered a pair of nokian weatherproofs instead, after hearing some good reports on those.

All of those are on the stock 17" annapurna alloys (complete with flaking lacquer, and white worm all over the place).  Wish I could find a set of 17" alloys for peanuts on ebay whilst I get these repainted...

Andy

Hi we live out on the French/German/Swiss border so regularly see some moody ice n snow. Plus we venture up into the Vosges Mountains over winter.

i ordered a set of tuv approved 16" steelies from an outfit in Germany with Goodyear ultragrip 8 winters pre fitted n balanced. Think they deliver to the U.K.

driving On uncleared roads thick ice is just remarkable. The yeti hasn't been stopped yet. Tight, steep hairpin turns going up and down with ease.

they are awesome on soaking wet roads too. I stick the summers back on mid April.

winters every day for me.
