VW Passat 2.0 TDI 170BHP

Hi Guys

Anyone driven one of these yet? Interested to find out if the performance was noticeable over the 140bhp version and also whether it was quieter. Just trying to find out what the Octavia VRS Diesel might be like.

Cheers

reviews of the engine are not too good from what I have seen. They recommend to save the money and go for the 140 as it's no that much faster, yet is more peaky which makes it not as nice to drive as the smooth 140.

Not tried it personally though.

I hear the 0-60 is noticably better but it doesn't gain a lot over the 140 'in gear'. It's also more 'peaky' than the 140 so harder to make use of the power band and the fuel economy is 10% worse. The 170 is quieter tho due to the piezo injectors it uses.

I wouldn't imagine there is a huge increase in torque over the 140 which is what counts in a diesel. The fuel economy takes a hit as does the CO2 output which is essential to fleet drivers, it jumps a VED band as well.

I am looking forward to the 2.0TDI 140 octy but I don't think it will blow me away as it only has 10Nm more torque than the PD130 which is already a ruddy good engine.

It's a bit smoother i think as it's a 16 valve head and there'a a spike in the torque curve you need to watch particularly in 2nd gear. If you drive in a spirited manner you really need ESP to get the power down especially in the wet. The peak torque on the 2.0 TDi is at about 2,500 rpm. I find this much more accessable than the other diesels i've driven like the PD130 where peak torque is under 2000 rpm. Give the car a test drive. I think you'll be impressed especially by that peaky torque curve which is actually great fun once you get used to it.

As a matter of interest what MPG are people getting out of 2.0TDI DSG vehicles both around town and on long runs?
