Tailgate Replacement

Featured Replies

I'm changing the tailgate on swmbo's Fabia after I lost an argument with a wall!

I've got a new tailgate ready to fit in correct colour which has had the loom disconnected at the plug from the roofline but they've had to cut 1 of the wires. Looking on ElsaWin it says to disconnect all the wiring within the tailgate and pull the wires back and then feed back through the new tailgate. Has anyone done this and how easy/difficult was it to feed the wires back into the new tailgate? Or am I better to leave the wiring on the new tailgate and solder in the broken wire to the loom on the car?

Haven't tried it but I would suggest care with removing any wires as feeding new ones may be tight. You might be able to find the connection at the further end of the cable, if it all flows in one loom but if it sections off, it amy be tricky. You will almost certainly need to access the internal areas so removing all the trim will be a cert. You may have to disconnect all the wires, connect the ends to string, pull them out so the string goes through too and then us the strip to re-pull the replacement wires back in to the tailgate. Be aware, the boot remote and wiper motor may have separate branches, as may the rear numberplate lights. so this could be challenging.

Ended up tracing loom into C pillar and left wiring intact throughout the tailgate - as you say, it would have been a nightmare to re-route I reckon! Don't know why the 'official' way is to track back through tailgate though - must be due to a new tailgate not having the loom?? The broken wire ended up only being an earth luckily enough!

Anyways, done and set nicely and closes properly and restored back to it's former glory, to the satisfaction of swmbo!!

Thats great news. Perhaps the best wire to snap as no earth, no circuit so nothing to short out!
