WILL A FABIA 1.2 TSI CBZ ENGINE FIT AN OCTAVIA 1.2 TSI CBZ

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone, new member looking for advice.

I have a 2011 Octavia which I suspect has had the dreaded timing chain failure. The engine turns, but wont fire and I have been told there is no compression.I am looking to replece the engine with a salvage engine and have seen 1 for a Fabia. It has the same CBZ engine code as mine,so it it a straight swap or not?

Thanks

What's the engine code CBZ????

Is it CBZA or CBZB?

The log book says CBZ

Did it suffer the usual symptoms, loud rattle on start up etc?  And how confident is the no compression diagnosis (on one or more cylinders?).

Could it simply be an electrical problem (eg coilpak or sensor failure) , fuel supply issue etc, what does diagnostic scan say?

Does it have full or recent skoda service history? You might be lucky and get a goodwill replacement. Some people have even well out of warranty. The camchain is a well known design fault. You could try the legal (small claims ) route.

Uk spec Octavia's have CBZB (105ps) whereas fabias could have CBZA (85/86ps) or CBZB (105ps).  Basically the same engine different power output though sometime in 2012 they had some major changes, upgraded camchain design and mysteriously a larger oil capacity (from 3.6 to 3.9 litres) so possibly different sump pan and oil pump.

If you do attempt a transplant you might need the ecu, don't know what problems that might cause.

Before you go all out though, why not whip off the top black plastic timing cover and see if the timing chain has come off (could have jumped top or bottom sprocket) and the camshaft stopped turning with the crank. If it has come off and the camshaft is stationary then it might be worth removing the head, to check state of the piston/bores, valves etc. And whether its worthwhile refurbishing the head or to get a refurbed head off fleabay. Refit with the new latest chain kit (search the fabia forum for details).

Thank you XMAN  for your detailed answer. In the week prior to the problem, I had done around 400 miles, without any issues.Parked outside at about 4pm ,came out about 7.30 pm ,went to start the car and found it won't start.Called Green flag, who said couldnt hear the fuel pump kicking in,however the camshaft does turn .The display on dash does show "CHECK SAFELOCK" I personally think its something to do with the immobilser.I have had the car taken to another garage for a second opinion. Will update on the analysis.

"Check Safelock" won't be related; it's a standard thing in Skodas and VWs to warn you about locking passengers in the car
