2005 vRS new to me knowledge required

Featured Replies

Hi;

Brand new to the forum bare with me.

Just purchased a 2005 vRS of my Dad 70k 1 owner full history etc etc

love the car BUT... I have a number of issues (I think) and my dad wouldn’t of noticed these as the car didn’t get used often as of the past couple of years.

1- wheel bearing noise either on front or both

2- noise when coming to a stop almost like a turbine shutting down (brakes on or off)

3: slight wave to the steering wheel while driving not like wobble but like a boat on a lake movement :/

4: sump plug butchered by a garage causing small leak... best to renew sump?

5: wind up a alley noise at mid boost acceleration (boost fine)

Gear box feels notchy some times slightly stiff to get 1st/ reverse but only on a few occasions (dog bone/ gearbox oil/ cable adjustment?)

and probably need full service all though it’s always been done each year but gets stood all year by my dad- so- oil, oil filter, cabin filter, fuel filter, air filter

Then the usual fogging up windows

squeaky rear bushes

if if you can shed any light on the above so it’s all in one place feel free and thanks In advance

I had the same notchy gearbox and difficult to get 1st/ reverse but changed the gearbox oil, reset the gear linkages and did the gearbox shim mod and it's perfect now on my 2005 Vrs

fogging up windows will be leaky door seals I would imagine

Hi;

thanks for your reply,

I want to do gearbox oil, dog bone mount and the cable re set but haven't heard of the shim mod?

Is this something I should be considering?

Thanks

I had some clutch creep in 1st gear which is why I did the shim mod. It's easy to do and the shim and the cap that you need are cheap enough.

Why not change the gearbox oil reset the gearbox cables and see if that sorts out your problem.

If not try the shim mod maybe.

I replaced my dogbone mount with the Superpro one as well. Didn't make a massive positive difference to anything but the car vibrates at idle a little more now.

The OEM one I took out was fine so changing it didn't benefit me but if your dogbone mount is shot at then it's worth doing.

Well the dog bone is just a easy thing to do and have seen some on here have positive results so that’s why I’m on that train of thought.

I would be putting a standard factory part on as I’m more concerned in getting the car driving and working properly as apposed to upgrades etc.

i don’t have much luck when I comes to cars :/ don’t want to push my luck.

I have been been watching and reading about the cable link adjustment process but most if not all are for the golf 5 speed so not fully clued up in regards to the process on the vRS 6 speed.

as for the gearbox oil I’m looking to either do i it or get it done quite sharpish the cars never been driven hard but has gone long periods of time In a freezing cold garage as my dad used his other vehicle mostly. That been said I think fresh oil in there would really help if only for placebo effect haha.

I will I’ll also have a read about the shim mod you mentioned above.

then it’s the oil pan (sump) I want to get a new one on there before I service it fully so I know is not dripping the oil out.

So while I am at it if anybody could advise me on-

Correct engine oil to use

( nothing I don’t need just what’s right for the car)

Correct Gearbox oil to use

for the gearbox I used Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 as a lot of people on here recommended it and I've been very pleased with it.

For the engine I used a Quantum VW spec 505.01 oil can't remember the grade

The grade should be easy for me to find I’ll just use what ever the general consensus is in here. Thanks again
