How to set a Route how I want it

Featured Replies

I have a particularly poor sense of direction so I rely a lot on my satnav. To get to a key road in my area I can either take an A road to A road approach, simple but can suffer from traffic issues at certain times of the day, or I can take a more direct but technical route that avoids the jams.

I am happy to do a trial run to work out the best way on a weekend when it is quiet, saving points en route. Can I assemble that journey under one heading so that it will work seamlessly? It will make life easier if I can do this journey when required without going wrong two or three times.

There is a Route section in my system which seems designed for this but I can't work out how do it despite downloading the brochure, surfing online etc. Am I deluding myself or is this a real option? If so how can I do it?

I have a 2017 Superb, Amundsen touch screen system.

Waypoints. Make a multi-stop journey by joining them up.

Unfortunately, whilst this is an option with the Colombus unit it is not with the Amundsen. It does not allow for Waypoints, not as far as I can make out and I have pressed pretty much every button and drop down box on the system.

I thought that until a couple of weeks ago - with my MIB1 Amundsen you set the first one of your waypoints as the destination and let it calculate the route, then you can add the next waypoint as an additional destination and let it calculate that section of the route and so on...

Is this in the Route section? I have set up three sections of the journey, I need to get to a location but to avoid the route the satnav wants to take me on I need to have 2 waypoints on the trip. However, I can only see that for each leg of the trip I need to set the destination then when nearly there, stop that one and start the route of the next one. Are you saying I can do it seamlessly so I only actually have to press the end route or have I done it as you describe?

It's explained in the online manual for the Amundsen (page 54 on the version I have) - once you've entered the first waypoint and let it calculate a route you again press Route and you will see an option for "New dest./stopover".

Cheers, I'll try this tonight.

Marvellous. I'm not sure I followed the above instructions exactly, not quite sure if my system is the same, but I got it to work. Basic gist, I saved the end destination plus the waypoints, although they are not termed that, in my Destination section. I called them route x, step 1, step 2, step 3. I then chose the end destination and selected one of the three route options given. Instead of just driving off I then select Destination again and choose the first saved point back from the end destination. It asks if you want to drive straight to there or Add it. Add it . Repeat the process but then choose the next point going backwards. Add again. When they are all added you set off, the route follows the stages you have set but in one flow.

This may be exactly what the manual states and I have just not understood the terminology but, hey it works so that is what matters.

Thanks for your help.

I've not used a Skoda built-in SatNav for a while (since I sold my last one), but regularly use a Garmin on my bikes. This is the sort of thing that Garmin have well sorted.

My old Garmin was so much easier to use, on POI's in particular, but the aesthetics of the built in satnav means I am determined to get the best out of it. I don't think they can do much product testing with non techie people as it would fail pretty quickly. Garmin and TomTom are streets ahead in usability terms.

Any self respecting software tester (a job I did for several years) would have rejected the current Skoda sat nav systems without hesitation; they are too slow, too clumsy and far too difficult to customise or update.

But like most software testing nowadays I suspect the testing was done using scripts written by the developers themselves (which will have the same misunderstandings and assumptions as they had when writing the software) - all PROPER software testing is done by a separate team using an approach known as "Chinese wall testing" where no assumptions are shared.

I should add, I absolutely love my car and there are certain aspects of the satnav that are perfectly decent. It could and should be so much better however. Simply copying what the big satnav companies offer would be a sensible starting point. They don't need to do anything more than that.
