REAR FOG LIGHTS

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I drove my 2016 Superb SEL Exec Estate in heavy fog for the first time last night. When I switched on the rear fog lights only the offside one came on. Is this a fault or does the car only have 1 rear fog light? The manual is uninformative on the subject!

Only one fog light. Same on most UK spec cars not just VAG models.

Is it like the Octy and can programme the two?

Thanks for that - saves me a trip to the dealer!

No, there are no LEDs in the other ‘fog light’.

A really stupid money pinching idea. And what happens when we drive on the continent? Potential accident waiting.

The r/h fog light will suffice.

Personally I’m not a fan of twin rear fog lights as they can mask the brake lights.

^^^ +1

Only one 'rear foglamp' is required by the Regs in the UK (and I think in most other euro countries) which is why only one is provided; nothing to do with penny pinching.

No worries about driving on the continent as long as use is only transient. Need/want to register the vehicle locally and you probably need to make adjustments; for example think of getting an MOT on a left hand drive French car in the UK.

As for an accident waiting to happen? Nah; there is far more risk from drivers who insist on using the one high intensity rear lamp when it is not necessary; god forbid they get 2 to dazzle us all with

For me it’s OCD! One side just feels like there’s a bulb out. At least we rarely use them over here in the UK  (apart for the idiots using their front ones all the time.

My 2p's worth....

The rear fog lamp indicates the offside rear of the vehicle in dense fog. So driving on the Continent we can appear to be pulled over to the nearside of the road and you will eventually find a stupid person driving recklessly behind who will assume.....

Stupid idea by some designer/scientist/standards commitee in the EU who probably didn't even consider other countries and "hey, we'll use the other side for a single reversing light how neat is that?"

Ranks as stupid as cornering fogs (aka broken lights), and all in one indicators/sidelights/drls (aka confusion beacons) and animated indicator strips (aka look at me, let me distract you lights).

Bad enough having to put up with over bright front led sidelights.

Rant over, must take pills.....

It's always Foggy where I live, loads of drivers with their Fog lamps on all day.

Some people even just drive with Fog lamps. I have X Ray sight so I don't use my Fog lamps when it's not Foggy for me.

The Highway Code says that you should only use your fog lamps when the visibility drops below 100m. If you're not sure when that is, a good rule of thumb is to work out whether you can see the tail lights of the car in front of you. If you can't, you (and they) should probably be using rear fog lamps.

PS

having turned their Fog lamps on, enables them to drive faster...

Only closely followed by those people who use DRLs only in the dark!!

A rather stupid statement. If you cant see their tail lights, you cant see the car, so how do you know there is a car there?

Adaptive cruise control maybe??;)

Which leads me on to a pet hate cornering fog lights. How are these legal? If riding with fog lights in good conditions is illegal. i find oncoming lights turning on and off distracting

Personally I usually have no problem with people riding towards me with both front fogs on as modern fog lights only illuminate low near areas and dont cause me glare unlike drls and insufficiently dimmed sidelights (using drls) on certain makes of cars, citroen and mercedes spring to mind.

I assume if you can't see any car lights in front of you (when Foggy) the visibility is surely bad. It's that 100 metre thing that you need to be aware of. Can you stop within the distance you can see? The Highway code tries to advise.

The trouble is with Fog and Falling snow is the light bouncing back reducing your visibility even more.

I think front Fog lamps are quite distracting and can be out of alignment as they are not checked in the MOT.

People always run into the back of a vehicle in Foggy conditions because they didn't see the vehicle in front or leave enough room to be able to stop.

As for adaptive cruise, I was thinking also it must be able to see in Fog?

Someone was debating this on Facebook about their Octy and he needed the other side enabling as he regularly drives in Germany.

His dealership enabled it for Him.

To purely drive in Germany or elsewhere in Europe it is not required.

If however he is in the forces then the rules are different.

Gizmo does this mean that these are sealed units so I need to replace the actual light cluster ( for long term continental use) or can I just add an LED to the left hand unit? (and then have it coded)

It would need a light unit, and possibly an extra wire as well
