HID's affecting radio reception

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any issues after fitting HID's affecting radio reception?
I never even noticed until the other day.
Sidelights are LED and if I turn them on, no problem.
IF however I turn on the dipped beam HID's, the reception weakens in strength so much that the station is not worth listening to.
That said, the only stations unaffected are Radio1, Radio2, Radio3 and Radio4.
It seems to just affect the local FM stations. Or the BBC are conspiring :/
Any ideas how to solve this, please?

Headlights can and often do affect the radio signals. I think some bulbs have a kind of built in suppressor but then, I think you can obtain an inline suppressor to help eliminate the problem. Try your local ICE shop...

I don't have experience with that on cars, but from my motorcycle. I converted to HID some years back (have now changed to LED). The HID-electronics completely messed up the electronic speedometer of the bike until I moved it away as far I could. Obviously distances on a MC are much smaller than in a car, but HID has the potential to interfere with electronic systems.

Put tin foil behind the caps ;)

Chinese HID's?

Put RF suppressors in line with the hid inverter supply something like this

Obviously not CE compliant, if it effects reception of nearby devices (particularly emergency services, police radio) you may find yourself in trouble

Just put a 'good quality' 35w, 4300k HID set in my 2007 Roomster (projectors).

At last, I can see to drive at night in the rain. The standard projecters are dangerously poor, even with Osram Nightbreakers.

BUT, I had to mess around to install the bulbs with return-wire facing down (get rid of shadow-line), and;

Radio interference is unbelievable / not acceptable.

Contacted the supplier (was recommended on this site a few times in the past) who replies:

Regards to the return wire it doesn’t matter where it sits as it shouldn’t interfere with the light and regards to the interference we have heard of this issue a couple of times before and customer have brought a suppressor from halfords which has sorted this

So, not at all helpful, and does not seem to know their product.

Ballasts are earthed, screened the HV transormers and all cables, no improvement.

Have now ordered Ferrite cores to install on the supply and the HV cables, perhaps these will improve the interference.

So, if anyone has found a good solution to HID Radio Interference, I would be very interested.

Probably, it would be to purchase an 'even better' quality HID set (or at least better ballasts).

Regards to all.

Just goes to show how cheap these kits are......:dull:

Either way retro fitting HID's without correct head lamps and headlamp washers / cleaning system is an MOT failure and they are REALLY annoying at blinding other drivers !!
