Things to do at a service

Featured Replies

I hate these newer cars without a service manual.

In my Skoda from 2015 - there is only written that I have to 'make a service' and oil change and eventually change of break fluid every year or three - nothing else is mentioned.

I understand this is because it's being run through the SKODA system, but what if I want to maintain my services myself? How do I find out when its due to change belts, filters, aircon bits etc?

Does anyone have any manuals that actually explains this?

For not very much (I think it’s 8 euros an hour) you can subscribe to the ERWIN system which is the central database that the dealers use. This contains all the service and maintenance information / workshop manual etc. You can download and print stuff. Amongst other stuff you will find the maintenance schedule listing the things to be done at the various miles/years, with links to the “how to” guides. You put your VIN in, it spits out the schedule. Well worth 8 euros.

Brake Fluid is at 3 years first, then every 2 years.

Unless you check for H2o in the Fluid and it needs changed sooner.

As to other things, depends on use.

Look at the VW Servicing Schedules.

Spark Plugs @ 40,000 miles, Air Filter then, if not sooner, Pollen Filter each 2 years if not sooner.

Brakes Inspection, Steering Inspection, Tyres,  general Servicing & Maintenance,  Location location location, Weather Use dependent.

Wet, Cold, Damp, Dusty, Hot makes a difference, miles / km per year.

Thanks. Just found i strange that Skoda does not supply anything free of charge.

As my car is now 2½ years with around 35.000 miles on the clock, it would then need both oil + filter, air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs, right?
Spark plugs a bit early, I think.

Check the type of sump plug fitted (if you are going to drain the oil as opposed to pump it out). My 2016 Superb has a plastic sump with a single-use plastic drain plug, not sure if yours would be the same, or a conventional metal sump. If the latter you should really replace the sealing washer. If the former you need the plug, but it’s only a few euros.

Spark Plugs replaced, especially Long Life spark plugs at 40,000 miles does seem a bit soon.

But then there have been Spark Plug premature failure with 1.2 TSI Euro 5 & Euro 6 engines,

so ignore the Manufacturers Spec / Guidelines if you want,

but best check all 4 plugs,  and since taking them out for about £35 or less, you are as well to replace them.  IMO.

This is the rather poor and over priced kind of Service offers you get in the UK.

Lots of looking maybe and not much parts for rip off pricing IMO.

Do you guys know how to turn off the service indicator message afterwards (without having to pay the dealer for doing it...)?
