Which oil - confused?

Featured Replies

It is that time of year when the Octavia is going to get a thorough going over, as it does at this time every year.

Not too confusing is it - until I look on various sites and try to determine which oil to use.

Previously, I have used Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w30 with no problems whatsoever, however this year I seem to be faced with all manner of alternatives in both 5w30 and 5w40.

The car is a 55 reg Octavia 1.9 TDi PD Classic, manual gearbox and has done 164K miles.

I have seen these oils at Eurocarparts, so which is the most suitable?

I am thinking the 5w30 option?????

Cheers Rob, it is saying that the sale has ended on that one. I have heard of Quantum, because a mechanic who used to work on my car (Ex VAG guy) said they used the stuff and it was good. I will have a look around and see what the best price on it is.

Have you heard any reports about Fuchs Titan oil, because a lot of VAG enthusiasts in Germany are keen on it apparently?

Do you reckon this is a genuine offer?

Both the oil's are fine for your engine and i'd say the second link is genuine, another oil i used to use in my old 2.0 tdi pd was Castrol edge 5w30, and yes it meets and exceeds the VW 507 required spec, don't know what it cost as i used to get it free as a perk of my job.

Cheers Julian I think that I am going to go for that offer of 4 Quantum.

There are 2 oil choices Quantum long life 3 and Quantum platinum PD.  Think they are 5w30 and 5w40 please check though. I used to use platinum then I moved to long life then recently back to platinum. There is a certain Scottish VAG dealer always listing bottles including delivery on eBay. But last month I got it ridiculously cheap from TPS as I have an account. Over £5 a bottle cheaper than eBay.

5w40 will be fine for fixed service intervals provided it meets vag 505.01 spec.  Asda also do vag approved oils, which are very competitively priced.
