A change of shocks and springs, options?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about changing the suspension on my Octavia MK2 VRS FL. The current ride is a little rough (I know it's expected on the VRS) and I don't think the car has ever had a change in the 100k it's done.

Skoda have pointed out a few small things which could also contribute to the ride but said they are not too bad at this point.

  • Inspect both front link rods / drop links (reported by Skoda as weak)
  • Inspect front console bushes (Skoda say perishing but not excessive play)
  • Inspect near side rear shock absorber buffer (Skoda say it is perished)

Regarding the suspension I think I want Bilsteins on but DO NOT want to alter the height or change anything that would need reporting to the insurers, I want OEM specification really. I think Bilstein B4 and B6 are regarded as OEM? Are there alternatives that give a comfier ride than Bilstein? Also what springs to go with a change of shocks (I'd change shocks and springs at the same time)

Lastly is there a set you can buy so both front shocks and springs and bot rear shocks and springs as a kit to make it easier and possibly cheaper, again not looking to lower really, I know some will say don't report to insurance but I wouldn't want to take that risk.

Cheers :)

The B4 Sport and B6 could both be used with the standard springs, the Koni FSD dampers are also an option.

Thanks for the reply,

do you sell the springs, or possibly a full B4/B6 set with springs included?

We sell the Bilstein dampers but unfortunately not standard springs.

Again thank you, I think I am set on the B4 purely because they are a more realistic price for me. What is the difference between sport and standard B4's? Obviously my car is a VRS so it is sports but would the standard give a slightly more comfier ride, or would standard not fit?

Only difference is piston length, for the VRS you need the Sport.

b4's are fine sport models will either be stiffer of shorter ...or both.

have you thought about going to 16's  wheels more side wall will give a comfier ride

Not given that any thought but don't think I would want smaller rims. The budget tyres the dealer put on probably doesn't help either to be honest!

Personally having used Bilstein struts and shocks I would go for them because they have a Gas cylinder Shock absorber or at least they used to be. I noticed that when I changed my tyres recently to Nokian Weatherproof 225/45 * 17" from some Nexens which the car came with, the ride was a bit softer if that helps.
