DSG advice

Featured Replies

Good morning.

I have had my 2013 Fabia 1.2tsi DSG Elegeance for a little over a month now. It has done 40,000 miles with full main dealer service history. It has the sticker in the boot to say the DSG recall work was done in 2014. I am extremely pleased with the car so far, have just done an 1100 mile round trip to Scotland & averaged 53.2mpg which I am more than pleased with.

However I am after some advice on how the DSG gearbox behaves - I have driven conventional automatics for 25+ years but realize the DSG is a totally different set-up.

When I set off in "D" I notice the upshifts from 1st - 2nd & 2nd to 3rd (and sometimes 3rd to 4th) are not quite as quick & sharp as they are if I use "S" mode or if I switch to manual mode & upshift. Is this normal or is there possibly an issue somewhere? It is almost as if the clutch is being allowed to slip slightly during these shifts when in "D". I am quite a sedate driver so don't tend to accelerate hard ( I must be getting older & wiser - LOL) & was told by the dealer I bought the car from that the transmission "learns" the habits of the driver over time. Maybe this might explain why the shifts seems to be slower (in "D") than when I 1st bought the car? I occasionally try "S" or manual mode just to assure myself that the shifts can occur much quicker so therefore assume the clutches are OK? I do have a very good 12 month warranty with the vehicle should I need to return to the dealer but I am hoping I don't have any need to.

I hope this makes sense & someone can enlighten me on how this box should behave as this is my 1st experiance of DSG. Maybe i'm just being paranoid - I won't be at all offended if anyone says that.

Your DQ200 when in 'S' has 6 gears. in 'D' it is 7.

You are just hold to higher RPM in 'S' before shifting gear.   In 'D' it shifts up gear quickly to save fuel on light throttle, on more throttle it goes as quick as in 'S'.

The Learning thing takes not much time.   It has no Long Term memory.

Read the Owners Manual on 'Dynamic' driving.  Take the car out boot it some and it learns who is boss, after someone else has driven it.

I think as has been said, you have to 'learn' the DSG box if you haven't had one before and the box has to 'learn' about you.

When I got my first Dsg I found it appeared hesitant, especially at junctions and roundabouts but after a few short drives It became the smoothest nicest gearbox I had ever experienced.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll soon be loving it.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The gearbox is very smooth & I am generally pleased with the car. I am sure I will get used to it's ways over time. Was just a little worried about the slow 1-2 & 2-3 upshifts when in "D" but I am beginning to think this is just the way the box behaves. Like I said if I use manual or "S" mode all the upshifts are extremely quick so I don't think there is a problem with the clutches or anything.

What power does your engine have?

Do you need new spark plugs now?

Check the rear brakes are not binding.

The thing with the DSG is, you just push the throttle down if you want to go faster, simple really.

Has your DSG had Service Campaign '34H5' carried out, some from 2013-2015 need it, done free. A software Update.

Check with Skoda if not done if it should be. Or at a Main Dealership.

EDIT.

Sorry, i see that it had '34F7' done, 2014.,

so '34H5' should not be needed.

MIne is the 105ps (77kw). No the brakes are definitely not binding.

I would try another similar car with a DSG and compare.

It is odd a 2013 car needed '34F7' doing.

Skoda knew in 2012 that a World Wide Recall was being done, your DSG should not have had Synthetic Oil in it.

Oh I see, i'm not familiar with all the details of what cars were recalled. Amongst all the service history I have for the vehicle there is a letter from Skoda asking the previous owner to contact them to have the 34F7 work done. Maybe they just changed the gearbox oil anyway regardless of whether it needed it or not?

Incidentally, out of curiosity is the mechatronics unit oil separate from the actual gearbox oil or is it combined?

to correct spelling mistake

Exactly.

Maybe they did change the oil, incase.  maybe the software update was not correctly carried out, because some were not carried out correctly.

So you could always ask to have it done again.

From your OP the 'Dealer' or someone at the Dealership told you it learns your habits.  So they knew a bit, but maybe not that much.

So maybe worth asking Skoda UK,  can you have your DSG serviced free again, and the Software Update done with an External Power Source Used.

Reason being, the growing number of DQ200 failing, those with or without '35F7' carried out.  2012/2013 vehicles.

They SKODA CZ seem to not know what oil was in all the DQ200's they installed at the factory.

& Dealership seem to have made errors.
