Buying Superb 170 4x4 estate - what should I look out for?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Back to the forum after a long break. Been driving a Seat Leon Cupra R for the last 13 years.

Need something to tow a caravan so am going to look at a 2013 170bhp Elegance estate with the L&K pack tomorrow morning.

I haven't bought a car for 13 years so am pretty rusty. It looks very clean with 2 owners and 40k on the clock. It's a manual rather than DSG.

Wondering if there's anything specific I should should keep an eye out for when looking it over or on the test drive?

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

:)

I have the 170 4x4 estate,it has been faultless with one exception,if the one you are looking at has a panoramic sunroof, check under the front mats very carefully to ensure the carpet is dry.

I have towed a caravan with mine,it was very capable.

Just had a thought, think the haldex needs an oil change at 40k,check if that has been done and you will need to check the service schedule to see if its getting ready for a cam belt based on age. Sorry i can't check my service book for you,i'm away from it at the mo. Someone on here will know the exact times/distances they are due or a quick search should pull up the info you need.

Thanks. It does have the sunroof so will be sure to check the floor. The sunroofs are prone to leaking then?

I think the haldex oil.os every 3 years and cambelt every 4 so both should have been done.

It is being sold by a dealer who supplied it new and have since part exchanged once before and always serviced it so I'm hopeful the service schedule will have been adhered to.

Haldex - and DSG - every 40k miles.

Cambelt - 4 or 5 years - 100k miles.

I've had a real drama with the sunroof on mine,it had been leaking onto the headliner, down the a pillar trim and then behind footwell plastics ,with no visible staining ,into the floor where it is soaked up by the sound deadening, which can hold ALOT of water. Blocked drain tubes are quite often the culprit, not in my case though, there is a join within the frame of the sunroof assembly where plastic meets aluminium which also fails and leaks. Have a look on the Yeti forum, there is an excellent thread about how someone identified the problem.

Its still ongoing with me,its such a shame because as i said up to that point i thought the car was excellent for its chosen purpose.

The same sunroof is used across various VAG cars, some googling shows it to be an issue across the models. Just tread carefully,i was really pleased to find a car with such an expensive option fitted but wouldn't have another,i would have another Superb however, but i accept I'm a little bitter towards the sunroof.

Good luck, let us know what you think when you have viewed it.

Paul.
