PD Cambelt Change Check Cam Timing.

Featured Replies

Hope this is useful for anyone who thinks their PD isn’t running quite tight after a cambelt change.

4 years ago I had my 140pd cambelt and waterpump changed by my dealer. Wasn’t sure if I was imagining it, but the engine seemed noisier and the idle was more uneven when cold. I had a scan and the torsion value was at -2 well within Skoda’s spec, but reading up it should be 0 +/- 0.5.

Forward another 4 years I’ve just had the cambelt and waterpump changed at Autoelite in hull who have looked after my SLK for years. They have all the VAG Gear as one of the lads has an Audi.

What a difference, with the cam timing set at optimum, the engine is quieter and much more lively and the tick over silky smooth.

I wonder about the values quoted whilst I am a bit rusty on the subject --my '03 PD SEAT 130   was spec'ed @0 +/- 6 ---- mine was @ -2 then later (after belt change ) smack on,   and there was a difference   I wonder if different engines have their "own" numbers despite all  being PD's ?

The Tech who did the work on the Scout always sets the Torsion at 0. I could definitely notice a big difference from the -2 after the previous change.

Reading up on the subject some people suggest there is a plate giving the Torsion value the engine left the factory with. They also suggest noting down the value before the cambelt change as a reference. Apparently small differences in locking tools can lead to the differences.
