Door loom and/or electric mirror issues

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have an issue with the drivers door. The mirror switch does nothing to the mirrors but instead, operates the central locking! The auto window function doesn't work on the drivers side and it "stutters" on the way up. The door loom was missing the rubber gaiter and has heat shrink on the wires so clearly, it has been worked on before. I bought a used wiring loom but this didn't work, it had no power what so ever! The part number was slightly different (just the last 2 letters). I've since then bought another used loom but with the exact part number and this too didn't work, again, no power whatsoever!

The last one at least powered the windows and central locking etc. I'm stumped as to what this could be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Firstly, I cannot say with any real degree of certainty, but removing and replacing the looms MIGHT just mean you need to re-code... Unlikely but possible. It does sound though, that wires may have been connected wrongly or have chaffed and/or shorted on each other. Have you tried to disconnect the cars battery for a while and then reconnect? Should have been doing this anyway, whilst touching the wiring! Stuttering of the window suggests either the switch is faulty, the motor is faulty or even, possibly, the window is filthy or covered in tree sap, that makes it stick a lot. Tree sap, if left on the window, dries and can even be enough to stop the glass moving, possibly making the motor work too hard or overheat and cut out.

The loom with incorrect digits, might be for a vehicle with less functions, say, no mirror heaters or non-electric mirrors, etc. The used one could well have severed wires inside the loom. Where you mentioned the heat shrink and missing gaiter, the wires are quite likely to sever or snap completely. It is a fairly common issue. The auto function can (And will need to be) be re-set. You hold the window switch down until the glass is fully lowered, holding it switched on for a few more seconds. Then, do the same thing going up. You may need to do this a couple of times and to both windows but if its just the reset function, it should then operate correctly. Up until it rains again!

Thanks for the reply mrgf.

I did think if it needed recoding but no idea how I would do that. I haven't disconnected the battery as I unplugged it all and took it out before I started messing with the wires but that is a possibility that I will try this evening.

I have tried the window reset but it doesn't work due to the fact that it won't go up automatically, it stops, forcing me to let go off the button and pressing it again. Will a VCDS scan point out the issues with the window (whether it's the switch or motor)?

I am not familiar with VCDS so can't help, just had windows play up on many occasions due to dirty switches or water making the things stop auto function etc. Also had to fix wires in loom and noticed it is a frequent gripe on VW based cars! Switches are quite cheap on ebay but most will be red, not green. Could be an easy way to test though. The window stopping fault could just be a dirty switch. Do you think you are capable if dismantling and cleaning it a bit? It does help. Replacement switches from eBay can be as little as £4 for the drivers side, just a few pee over £3 for the passengers side.  Skoda want around £40 and £15 respectively.

I think I know where the problem lies, unfortunately it's behind the dashboard! I removed the plastic round the dials and found a blackbox fitted by the insurance company. I took the flap off the side and can see wires that have electrical tape around it so someone has messed behind it!

Has anyone removed the dashboard? I only need to remove the bottom part, not sure if this can be separated? And can this be done without taking the steering wheel off?

Hi.

I've got a similar problem, where the drivers door window doesn't work whatsoever and the other 3 only work with the ignition on with their own controllers?

Any ideas?

VCDS doesn't show anything
