Changing to Mirrorlink/Smartlink compatible USB-plug

Recommended Posts

I needed to change from old USB-plug [5Q0 035 726 B] to new one [5Q0 035 726 E] for Smartlink -support, but couldn't find good instructions to do so - so here's my try on those.

Sorry if I'm being picture heavy.

After removing the display

- Carefully detach Climatic control panel (I had 4 plug-in plastic bolts and a plastic trim), electric connectors have a red locking pin

- USB-plug-panel detaches downwards

- USB & AUX-plugs are in a cradle, connector for the USB-plug is different than original

- ...which can be fixed with a sharp knife (or replacing the cable with a real one up to the main unit in the glovebox, i was lazy)

- Reassemble in reverse order

The AUX -plug [5Q0 035 724]? I just left it there, my original part number was identical with the replacement. There are clips on top and at the bottom holding those in place.

Just changed my USB plug. It would have been a 5 minute job if i'd realised the clip underneath needs pulling down rather than pushing up :D

I managed to do it without unplugging the climate connectors, resting the climate unit where the screen goes whilst changing the USB plug

All done now, Android Auto is a bit underwhelming but I guess I should give it more time!

If i get this right all I have to do is to replace the old usb connector whit a new one (5Q0 035 726 E) Then I got mirrorlink? No coding needed?

Hi, question for anyone that might know the answer! I’m in the process of upgrading my 64 vrs to a newer unit with car play and this thread was really useful. I’ve sourced a good condition head unit and screen from eBay which work fine and I’ve got a guy doing the CP removal and car play activation in a couple of weeks.

My only question is this. I’ve sourced a used 5Q0035726E USB port and swapped it ready for the swap over radio, but it doesn’t seem to want to work. If I put the old connector back on that works fine. Is there some limitation where the 726E won’t work with my older unit? Have I likely got a faulty 726E? Will the 726E only work with the newer unit once fitted…?
