Aftermarket Headunit restarts on start stop and usb devices lose memory

Featured Replies

Hi guys i fitted a 10 inch aftermarket android headunit in my skoda octavia 2014. My biggest problem is that my car has start stop technology so everytine it starts stops the headunit restarts and also when i plug in the usb stick to play music it works but after startingthe car again it loses memory and says no usb devices found.

Another issue is that the antenna wiring has two jacks that should fit in the car radio wiring jacks but only one fits and if i put radio to kiss 100fm it turns screen off and reboots but no picture or display. The radio annoyningly stays on all the time on home screen and keeps catching different frequencys in the middle of a radio reception.

I sent it back to retailer who said they will check it and they sent it back saying no problems found. Which is annoying when i listed all problems on a paper and sent it to them. The letter attached was in german language so had to use google translate.

I bought it from xomax germany seller on ebay and it said it is compatible with my car but the radio jacks dont fit in both holes of car radio jacks.

Could u guys let me know what can i do to achieve the following.

1.Radio stays on while cranking engine on

2.usb devices stay connected

3.how can i make antenna fit properly in both jacks in the car wiring

4.the most annoying part how to get rid of radio playing automatically when unit is on.

This post contains the headunit i purchased.

If it helps.

Thanks a million in advance for ur time and help.

Sounds like you just need to change the +ve on the new HU so both its power feeds come from permanent live instead of switched. The +ve connections on aftermarket HU connectors usually have swappable connectors.

Thank you very much for your reply mate I'm a total novice when it comes to headunit and wiring will I find a positive and negative with the wiring loom of headunit or off the car you can see the photos and let me know if I can get some help thank you very much again

It's a few years since I changed a HU, but it will be the red and yellow wires on the ISO end (new headunit), no idea what colours Skoda will use. I wish manufacturers had to comply with some sort of wiring standard!

There isn't a switched supply to the OEM headunit anymore. If it's restarting during cranking or stop/start activation, it's because the headunit can't deal with the voltage drop on cranking or it's deciding to reboot due to a CAN-bus message. Either way, wiring changes are unlikely to help.

The USB issue is most likely to be due to a bug in the headunit firmware.

The OEM headunit has a diversity antenna so it'll use whichever antenna has the best signal strength. The aftermarket one probably doesn't support diversity so it only needs one. Assuming you get both FM and AM reception, it's fine. Rebooting when tuning to Kiss is another firmware bug.

To be honest, it just sounds like a rubbish headunit with some massive bugs in the firmware. If there isn't a firmware update that resolves these, I'd probably send it back and demand a full refund...
