Up hill reverse struggle

Featured Replies

I am aware of the dsg gearbox giving issues when reversing up a steep gradient but today I had to reverse park on quite a steep street and I noticed that the car was labouring to gain and maintain momentum... maybe I am just being too cautious but still no harm asking if anyone else has had this issue... mine is a 2.0 diesel manual by the by

So, which is it now in your car?

^^^ The OP has a manual, but is aware of stories of DSG struggling.

But then maybe some do or some say they do. Steep gradients come in different steepness's.

That's why I'm asking, because it would be the first I've heard of a car struggling in reverse gear on a manual transmission ... maybe it's due to the clutch, not the actual gearbox?

My car is a manual.. I was making the point that I am aware of the issue with the DSG and wanted to see if there were similar issues with the manual

First that I would hear of it, you sure it isn't just an issue with your front brake calipers locking (due to the handbrake not properly releasing) and putting up more resistance to the wheels?

It is something I will look at.. I would doubt it but I will look.. thanks for the tip

This one is often overlooked ... there are easy tell-tell signs ... the car starts with difficulty on flat road (if you're up/down hill of course you wouldn't normally notice because you initially expect to use more throttle) ... jack up the car, no handbrake, and try turning the wheels, they shouldn't put any resistance (the Superb uses the rear wheels for the handbrake locking) ... the brake caliper(s) is/are very hot after a very short drive (you would know if you brake excessively during that time) ... if is is a manual not electric handbrake (talking in general), you would have to notice that you can pull the handbrake lever more easily (this gets overlooked if the locking movement is longer, i.e. 5-6 "clicks" until it can grab a hold on the wheels, if you can lock the wheels with the handbrake within 2-3 "clicks", this would be more obvious.

my dsg  has no issues with hills forward or backward provided you accelerate smoothly and constantly and dont come on and off the throttle, i find that confuses the box and is like a learner with poor clutch control and we have some pretty decent hills round here, what i find really clever with the DSG though is it will change down on a hill if you brake provided its within the parameters and hold the gear until you press the throttle again

For me, this one was a bit confusing at first, because I would often find myself driving down the hill in 3rd gear, and it won't upshift (even though it should by the driving speed), even though the engine is in slightly higher RPMs
