Cam Chain on 2006 VRS TSi

Featured Replies

Second post of the day.

I've had an irritating rattle from the engine for a while now, car performs fine etc. and finally got the garage to diagnose it as the Cam chain being worn (not the main timing chain, mine has a belt anyway, but the small chain on the other end of cams).

To avoid confusion as to which chain I'm referring to I have found a DIY guide to replacement online but this is completely beyond my patience levels and I also have zero free time to do it!

Has anyone had this done by a garage, I've been quoted rather a lot of money and just want a comparison.

As mentioned in another post, my car was unfortunately written off at beginning of the year after a lovely person backed into me and rearranged my drivers door to the point where the repair was over deemed to be more than 50% of the cars value. I've got the insurance money but at the moment I'm trying to decide whether to keep running it for another year (as other than this fault the car has been nothing but a pleasure to own for the last 4 years) or just cut my losses and put it up for sale sold 'as-is'.

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Did mine a couple of years back. Parts cost was approx £140 and took approx 4 to 5 hrs to do, although could probably have been done a little quicker approx 3 to 4 hours (1 hour to take the thing apart, 1 hour to replace the chain and 1 hour to put it all back together), as long as 1) the exhaust compensator bolt comes out okay and 2) the oil ring seals don't break up on removal of the end cover. A camshaft locking tool is required for alignment.

Out of interest what was your quote?

Cheers for that.

They quoted £765 , I'm not actually sure what the garage states for it's hourly rate TBH, and it included parts, so that might be about right!?
