Help with 02 Sensor

Featured Replies

I’m after a bit of advice. I'd initially posted in the Octavia 2 section but then thought this might be a better place to ask.

Last summer whilst on a long road trip with the family, the EML popped up on the dash.  I always have a Carista OBD reader plugged in and it said P0036 and P0141.  I cleared the codes and we carried on with the holiday.

The codes and EML have been appearing every now and then since, but over the last few weeks the EML has been on about four times.  I am wanting to replace ‘Sensor 2’ but wondered which one that is - the one in the down pipe or the sensor further back?

I need to mention that the car is fitted with a Tony Banks Turbo back exhaust system that ran perfectly well for ten months before this happened.

If anyone can tell me which ‘Sensor 2’ is I’d be grateful.  I’d also be really appreciative if someone could give me the OE part number as our local Skoda dealership will fit one but they won’t give me the part number.  It’s a job I can tackle myself but I need the correct part code to see if there’s a Bosch alternative that doesn’t cost £156, which is what the parts department at Skoda quoted.

Below is the info from an OBD scan done yesterday.  Any help/advice would be brilliant as I would like to sort this out before we do any road trips this summer.

Thanks in advance.

P0139 Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Bank-1 Sensor-2 , Slow Response

P1114 Bank 1 – Sensor 2, Internal Resistant too High

P0140 Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Bank-1 Sensor-2, No Activity Detected

Edit : I managed to get a photo of the top sensor and it seems to be reasonably accessible if the engine cover is removed.  If this is the sensor mentioned in the scan then hopefully it can be sorted out fairly easily.

Sensor 2 will be furthest from the engine, nearest to tailpipe.

That's really helpful thank you. I can get a part ordered now and see if it sorts the error code.

Much appreciated.

Little tip for finding fault sensors I use is -  with the engine running and diagnostics connected unplug the suspected sensors one at a time and checking what codes it throws up before reconnecting and unplugging another. This is how I narrowed down a bad EGT Sensor in my turbo.

Would this be true for my 2014 Skoda Rapid as well? Thanks

Yep, in my experience sensor 1 is always closer to the engine's exhaust manifold than sensor 2.

OK I'll changed that one then as I got the P0141 code .....thank you

I’ve got a skoda octavia diesel vrs and I’m getting the error code P2196. Been told it’s the O2 sensor1 bank 1? Just wondering if someone could shed some light on the location of it? Also if the below part would be the right one? Thanks

Yes it might be or you might just be shooting the messenger.  The error codes point you in the right direction for the start of your diagnostics, they're not always the final answer.  If you do need a new sensor research in the Octavia forum with VRS owners and other that know how specific the the make and model of sensor needs to be.  Cheap sensors can often be a total waste of time, effort and money and be unreliable and/or short-lived.

"What are the Possible Causes of the P2196 VOLKSWAGEN Code?

Faulty Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1

Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 harness is open or shorted

Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 circuit poor electrical connection

Inappropriate fuel pressure

Faulty fuel injectors

Intake air leaks may be faulty

Vacuums leaks - [a cheap easy(?) thing to look for]

"How to Fix the P2196 VOLKSWAGEN Code?

Start by checking the "Possible Causes" listed above.  Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors.  Check for damaged components [hoses/pipes disconnected or leaking] and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins [clean connectors with electrical contact cleaner]".
