1.4 Tuning

Featured Replies

wouldn't bother myself mate, it will make it louder and give a funny induction noise when you blip the throttle, probably give you quicker responce at low speed but slower at high speeds due to heat soak.

if you want to any difference at all you need to fit a cold air intake, with that filter yes you will be getting more air in but you will be getting hot air in so actually be worse off in the end.

Quicker response at lower speed is what I was after, but you reccomend a cold air intake. Where Can I get one and how much?

For £60 I wouldn't bother on an otherwise untuned engine... :)

Okay so where would you guys start, I got

Seriously , don't bother.

You'll only get a very tiny improvement and if you declare the changes to your insurance company as you should it'll cost a load.

Just save any spare money towards changing it for a better car

If it were me...

£100 into savings account.

Remove spare tyre and replace with can of tyre foam (done at your own risk... ;) ).

Remove back seats.

If you want to start tinkering with the engine you'll have to pay a lot for relatively minimal gains, and then you'll start having issues with insurance, reliability, etc. etc. There are options, but you'd probably need to add another zero to the end of your budget...

Yeah, I Didnt think about the insurance :P I won't get a new one until the warranty runs out in May. So Until then I will have to put up with the fact that you can't sustain any speed in 5th gear

Rubbish, you can get 120MPH out of one of those. With some trying, the wind in the right direction. As long as it's flat or downhill :D

I'm going along at around 80MPH on a long and flat road (Private of course), in 4th, coming up for 5k or over it. I Change into 5th, and with my foot still welded to the floor I Slowed down to just over 60:eek: , and the car outright refused to go any faster. I Don't beleive it will do Skodas claim of 100MPH Either, unless they did it in 4th

Sounds like theres something wrong with your car mate! I'd get it checked. I can certify I have been in one of those in the Czech Republic, with 3 people in it at an indicated 200KPH. It might take a while to get there but it can do it.

Well Apart From an alternator load sensor, the fault code scan is clean. It's using BP Ultimate and It's got 14" Alloys with tyres that are a tad over-inflated. It's embarrasing on dual carriageways driving along like a granny in 4th with the engine having the nuts revved of it:O If you managed to get 200KPH with 3 people in the car are you absolutley sure it was an 8v, thats 125MPH!

Yup

It was a very straight long road, but even so....

I tested one in the UK myself when they first came out too and I can say that it should be capable of significantly more than what you're achieving.

It almost sounds like the've put a wrong gear ratio on 5th?! Although that can't really be true...

It goes from around 5500 in 4th to Over 3k in 5th if that helps, but that would be a pretty remarkable mistake to make, maybe it was made on A Friday afternoon:confused:

Edit: Iv'e just checked with the AA, It's supposed to do 21.1MPH Per 1kRPM in 5th, so at 4k you should be doing 84.4, but Im hanging around just above 3k. However the AA's figures could be utter bull, just like they say the 1.4 does 20-40 in 4th gear in 10 seconds. I Timed this myself and it took about 25, unless the figures are correct and I happen to have a total citrus fruit of a car :(

How much over 3k? Sounds like a pretty big drop in revs to me.

I dunno, someone else will be able to tell you but something doesn't sound quite right there.

I cant tell you off the top of my head as I am currently in a much faster vehicle(My Office chair) but definatley between 3 and 4, maybe 3.5K at a guess

In my 1.4 16v fabia 1-2 changing drops revs bout 1000rpm and from 3-4 it drops bout 6-700rpm, so in 4-5 it should be about 500?. The car is 06 model.

When i am driving about 62mph the car revs 3500 on fifth gear.. The car can rev up to +-7000prm if i remember correctly.

maybe if we weld my car and yours together youd get more ? :) I think the 1.4 is a great little engine for pootling into town, but wasnt meant to be driven at great speed. Hence 23 days and counting till VRS :P

For Some Stupid reason the 1.4 16v is shorter geared than the 8v (A Car which needs it more) and does only 19MPH Per 1k in 5th, but the redline on the 8v is 6k anyway

I saw 130 MPH on my old 53 plate 1400 16V

I have a 1.4 MPI 8v. It can do 170km/h. It hoovers around 4000rpm in 5th by 140km/h. Sounds like theres something seriously wrong with yours.

thats very weird.. My 1.4 16V goes more than 120 km/h when the RPM is 3500..

and yes its true.. it can rev up to 6500-7000 RPM which relly gives so much power

My rpm are closer to 4000 when driving 120kmh.. Maybe different gearbox in newer models..

Mine is a 2002 model.. but theres somethin that i dont get.. the 1.4 16V produces 101 HP.. in some websites it says 75.. the MPI is the one with 75.. is it that there are two different 1.4 16V engines?

The Engine Labelled "1.4 MPI" is the 8v 68BHP Skoda Sourced Engine. The 1.4 16v is avaliable in both 75 and 100BHP, they are similar engines but not Identical. Originally 1.4 75BHP Was for the Automatic transmission, but Early sport models had it too, could never see the point in it though.

Looks like a visit to the dealership for me, But the 8v was designed for people who were born in the days when they beleived that if you went over 15mph, the oxygen would be sucked out of you :).
