Variable servicing (low mileage) warranty question

Featured Replies

Has anyone run into issues with warranty claims while doing less than 10k a year and keeping the car on variable servicing?

Before you guys break out the pitchforks  I changed the oil and filter at 1000 miles (original spec Edge and OEM VW filter) and will be doing it at least once every year, but it could be 18 months (from new) before I get the first service notification.

I can’t find anything official saying you have to be on the fixed plan below 10k a year and some of the service plans from VW/Audi actually demand variable regardless of mileage so I was just wondering.

No need for warranty issues, you are servicing to Manufacturers schedule guidelines, the car leaves the factory on Variable / Flexible servicing and if you are servicing in 18,000-20,000 miles / 24 months what ever comes first then job done.

It has Long Life Oil in from the factory.

You do not have to be on 'fixed servicing',  372 days / 9,400 (10,000) miles, what ever comes first.

It was just in case I missed a clause or condition somewhere… will have to ask repeatedly not to change to fixed at the first service.

Probably go with Henrys South for convenience… and because they aren’t Arnold Clark

My manual 1.4tsi is also set to variable servicing and it's likely my annual mileage could be very low, guessing around 4k. Not short trips, just not used very often, and car garaged most of the time.

I paid for the 2 services package for £279 at time of delivery expecting a minor and major service would be done. So I was most annoyed when Skoda finance sent a letter confirming the service package was just one oil change service and one minor service (no time/mileage limit mentioned)

So now I am wondering whether to let the variable service regime run on and use the oil change service when the car indicates at 2 years, and minor service at 4 years/16k miles.

Planning to keep car for at least 10+ years.

I had a service plan based on mileage with my previous car and it’s a bit annoying that they recommend fixed for under 10k per year… unless they are liable for the extra cost… then variable is just fine :wondering:

You should be OK with 2 and 4 years as current synthetic stuff doesn’t age the way mineral oil used to. You are also doing longer trips so no excessive heat cycles. Also get the brake fluid changed at 2 years. In saying all that, I’m old school and if I was keeping it for 10+ years I would be dropping the oil every year, but it’s probably not needed with the tsi (no DPF) and no short trips. Also, if the plan you bought doesn’t comply with the 1st and 2nd service schedules you might have an issue with warranty. Is the 1st one at 2 years always just an oil service?

The 1000 mile change on mine was a throwback to older engines, but with mixed driving and 2 to 3 active regens per tank I will definitely be changing the oil once a year on mine.

If I were keeping the car for 10+ years I would be having a 3-way conversation between the dealer and my trusted independent. The first would make sure I am compliant for warranty purposes and the second to make sure it is maintained to my standard (which would include an annual inspection service and oil change as a minimum, with gearbox etc oil changes / filter changes as agreed with the indy).

Might be worth digging out the paperwork. I have a service pack for 2 services and I won’t be doing 10k a year. My 1st service is saying that it’s due in 460 days. The dealer told me that the service plan is a 2 year service plan and that to use both services provided it needs to be done on a yearly basis.

If they sold you the car, did the PDI and sold you the service plan it was for them to have their fully trained operative set the Servicing to Fixed Servicing.

They should know, it is the job they do day in and day out, selling cars and upselling other stuff.

Not an issue if on Variable and you have a Service Plan for Fixed servicing, you know when 12 months have passed since they PDI'd the car,

so they service it and change the Service Indicator to Fixed Servicing, and the next service comes 12 months later.
