Coolant consumtion

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2012 Octavia 105 TDI with 117 000 km on it. In December last year the warning light for coolant came on and I saw that it was below the "min" mark so I simply filled it up with more coolant. Now, 6 months and 9000 km later the light came on again. I filled it up with 0,5 liter to get back to a level between "min" and "max".

So, 0,5 liter coolant in 9000 km and 6 months. Is this normal or should I be worried?

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome,  so you are losing coolant and you need to find why / where.

?

When was your water pump replaced or has it not been?   Might be needing replaced soon.

Offski, thank you for your reply.

As far as I know the water pump has not been replaced. Is this the most probable cause?

Is this something that is urgent you think? To me, 0,5 l in 9000 km doesn't sound too alarming. Or is it?

Not an alarming amount,

but you do not want an unexpected loss of coolant and a awkward time or location.

If there is no obvious place leaking like at a pipe / joint then you had best price up what a water pump replacement will cost you.

If not required for a while then good.

OK! Thank you for your input!

After some Googling I found that the EGR cooler can start to leak coolant. And some people think that it can be connected to the VW Diesel Scandal "fix". What are your thoughts about that?

(I had my "fix" done about a year ago)

Double check around the edges of the radiator to look for staining (pink or purple depending on coolant). They can start slowly corroding / failing especially where the core is crimped to the plastic. It's sometimes hard to spot.

Also double check the header tank - they can crack
