Strange Steering Issue

Featured Replies

Have this weird fault in the steering on my VRs.

The steering can intermittently jerk while turning on gentle turns. I haven't noticed it when pulling strong into a bend.

It's really hard to describe and it's made it very difficult to search for.

The closest I can get to describing it is it feels like your driving over a stone or a cutting in the road. The wheel fights the turn for a second then goes back to normal.

I had a quick look under and the only thing I could see was a busted drop link. Track rods feel ok, no major movement at least, and the 4 wheel alignment have just been done.

I find I can replicate it going from right to left. Right turns seem fine.

Any idea where to look?

On Fabias  a common problem was the steering/tie rods inner joint (inside the rack boot) seizing due to water contamination/rust. Usually most noticeable when stood or low speed maneuvering and turning slowly lock to lock, basically sticking/releasing.

The steering/tie rods are removable/changeable.

That would rule out the play in the joint itself I guess. I could get the stick/release when I was checking it the other evening. Worth changing them anyhow I suppose.

Thanks

I would change the busted drop link first. It may be catching as you turn.
