Help with hot oil smell

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Im after some help with my vrs. Ive had her for 5 years now and its always had 4k oil changes and regular services. She's now on 145k and running fine. No smoke and very little oil usuage, but everytime i stop i get a massive stench of hot oil coming from the front of the engine near the radiator.

I've replaced the pcv pipes, oil pick up and s pipe under manifold to no avail. I then had the rocker cover gasket and half moon replaced which cured it for a short time. I then had the cam belt and waterpump changed and its back again. I figured it was coming from the rocker cover again but i cant see any staining.

Ive taken the intercooler pipe to throttle body off and there was some oil in there but not massive amounts.

Could it be the turbo seals on the way out? Any suggestions welcome!

Cheers,

Alex

Check Crankcase ventilation. If replacing rocker gasket fixed for a while I suspect you have an over pressurised crankcase - can be PCV valve, blocked ventilation or cream crackered piston rings/bores where gasses exceed  crankcase breather capacity. The former is cheap to fix and is a common issue.

I've seen this issue with numerous cars over the years including my Octavia (only 1.4!) which was a blocked crankcase vent tube within the air filter(blocked with oil mayo). One one bad case with a Ford Cortina mk IV many years ago the dipstick was blown out and oil was sprayed all over the place! This was a blocked oil vent/fire trap. I think your engine has a PCV valve - start there.

But basically if an engine cannot ventilate pressure builds up (especially if worn) that will eventually be forced out , be it past seals, gaskets, dipsticks........ This is possibly why it was sort of fixed for a while when you changed the rocker gasket. Ultimately if the crankcase is under pressure something will give.

Har to comment re intercooler - you usually find some oil here when all is "reasonable"

Thanks for your help.

When i replaced the pcv hoses i cleaned the pcv check valve instead of replacing it. (They were out of stock at my local place.)

From what you've said is it possible this is blocked?

When i open the oil filler cap i can feel a vacumn which i thought was a good sign?

Cheers,

Alex
