Wheel bearing

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just a little curiosity question if 3 wheels are not very warm but 1 is really warm were as you can't keep finger on does this mean that 1 has failed a can't hear any noise just as some have said its very hard to diagnose if it has failed.

Cheers

Its far more likely to be a binding brake constantly heating the disc and hub, common on Skodas because brakes are very rarely serviced properly  at dealers.

Binding is caused by one or more of the following.

Caliper not moving freely due to build up of corrosion and/or build up of brake dust/crud on sliding surfaces, inc pad backing plates guides and slide pins.

Pistons sticking or not retracting in calipers due to internal corrosion and/or debris often due to olds brake fluid.

Rear brakes binding can be due to sticking parking brake which could be caliper internal handbrake mechanism or cable related problems.

Strip down the offending brake and clean and dress sliding surfaces,  flush some brake fluid through and check/exercise the piston. Reassemble using only correct brake grease applied sparingly to sliding surfaces.

You may find pad and disc is worn more than the other side if its been really bad or going on for some time, so you may need to change pads and discs.

Thanks for the reply

A have just fitted a brand new rear brake caliper and its that 1 thats getting the hottest out of all 4 wheels.

Surely a brand new caliper can't be broke already.

Thanks

And also a have noticed is first thing in mornings drives lovely 42+ mpg but as things start to heat up as the day goes on the mpg goes down roughly 34 to 38 mpg.

So am not to sure if thats got anything to do with the wheel bearing or not.

Is the wheel getting lots more brake dust than the other side?

Did the mechanic clean up the brake carrier and check the caliper/pads could move freely? Sometimes the pad backing plates need to dressed (filed) to stop them catching.

Check the handbrake cable is releasing. A quick check is to look at the handbrake adjuster at the handbrake lever end in the cabin. Check both cables are moving the same. Check the handbrake adjustment is correct and not too tight.

Ye a cleaned everything hand brake adjusted right and all free as far as dust goes its roughly as dusty as the front wheel.

The other side is dustier so maybe that side's sticking a little more maybe a new caliper is required but that's the next project.

It's the side with the new caliper on thats getting hotter than the other 3 thats why am just asking could it be the wheel bearing starting to fail because it's getting hotter.

Thanks

I had a similar problem on my old Mk4 golf and it turned out to be a crushed brake hose that wasn't allowing fluid to return after applying the brakes. it was in effect operating as a one way valve and not allowing the caliper to release. When your new caliper was fitted did the mechanic clamp the hose to stop fluid loss? If so this could be the problem.
