Seat Leon ST Cupra

Featured Replies

Hi does anyone know If the Seat Leon St is the same size as the Octavia estate, specifically rear space and boot?

We don’t have a dealer nearby so can’t just have a look

Octavia boot is very slightly wider, taller and deeper than the Leon ST. WhatCar measured 10mm wider, 60mm deeper, and 80mm taller for the boot.

Same for rear space, legroom and headroom is slightly better. Again measurements from WhatCar suggest  additional 20mm legroom and additional 10mm headroom.

Not a huge amount of difference between either, but the Octavia is better on both.

I went from an Octavia VRS to a Cupra ST - while smaller, the Cupra ST is by no means small.

I had my Cupra side by side with @Petunet car in a garage and we pulled out the measuring tape: The Cupra booth was about 1cm smaller to every direction, but just as a reference, I came back from the airport today and it was possible to fit two large suitcases side by side - standing upright and with the longer side towards the backseats - and then two regular sized trolleys, this under the sliding partition, which was closed.

Major difference, I would say, is the leg room for rear sits (again, about one cm smaller on the Cupra) and the width... for the rear seats you can carry 3 persons in (relative) comfort on the Octavia but on the Cupra, while physically possible, I wouldn’t put anyone through it except for a very short journey.

Ok cool, so you have the Cupra. How do you rate it ? Is it a good family car? Do you have some pictures with suitcases in the back? Compared to vRS?

It is a perfectly capable family car - I am quite happy with it and it is very close to the Octavia: slightly down on space, quite up on sportiness.

Had you asked earlier, I would have made some pics of the full trunk, but I am not about to carry the suitcases there again ;)

Just consider it is almost the same size, so... not much difference in practice.

Useful this, as I was pondering a Mk3 estate or Leon ST for next year :)

My gut feeling was that the ST would be smaller, but it's good to know that there's not much in it

I was looking into estate boot sizes recently, hunting through the official figures for volume with seats up and seats down:

Superb 660 1950
Passat 650 1780
E class 650 1780
Octavia 610 1740
Golf 605 1620
Leon 587 1470
A6 565 1680
V90 560 1526
V60 557 1241

given that the sources were a mixture of Autotrader, What car and actual manufacturer's websites, some might not be completely accurate.

Nice one Thanks. So floor space is 1x1 meter basically.  Seems to be standard in the class among a number od competitors.

Isn't the wheelbase on the Octy longer than the Leon?

Yes, Leon Cupra ST ( and 5 door Leon Cupra) is 2631mm, non-Cupra 5 door and ST are 2636mm. The Octavia is 2686mm.

Same issue like vRS, no Cupra available to order

I don't know about the latest model, but we have a mk2 Leon and the mk3 Octavia - the Leon is a good car, but it feels more like a size class down - Golf / Focus sized whereas the Octavia feels more Mondeo sized.

In terms of boot space, I was amazed to find out recently that the Fabia estate has around the same capacity as the new Volvo V60!

Yep, went to see the new V60 - it is a smallish car, probably about 3 series tourer size, boot floor area 1x1 meters measured at the dealer and very low...seats/low roof not boxy like old school Volvos. It's a big drop to sit down into the driver seat.

I was just shocked, fair play to Skoda for making such practical cars, but Volvo estates used to be cavernous, seems they're all about "lifestyle" now rather than load lugging. They probably point you towards their SUV tanks if you mentioned you wanted a big boot.

That's exactly what happened :)

Is this the new V60 thats just come out?

New V60 quoted as 529/1441 litres.

Fabia estate 530/1395 litres

Octavia estate 610/1740 litres

Leon ST 587/1470 litres

I'm guessing we sacrifice rear seat space for the huge boot? It's amazing the Octavia's is 45L bigger than the A6. And only 40L down on the massive E Class estate. Not complaining!

I used to blame the Golf platform for that, stretching a relatively large car over a Golf wheelbase would lead to short rear legroom and a huge boot. But with the MQB platform it looks like that was by design.
