Blue cooked dry DSG clutch

Featured Replies

I saw, or was shown, a clutch pack removed from a dry DSG, compared to a wet DSG clutch pack.

The dry clutch had been "cooked blue" i.e. been got so hot that the steel turned blue=very hot, from metal working school memories.

but how?

Presumably due to a failure of the protective over temperature sensor, the one that causes the "dropping" out of gear when the clutch pack is being overworked, or imagines it might be.

btw

I was asked if towed with the dry DSG, as "apparently" towing is associated with premature dry DSG clutch pack failure,

but again,

how?

surely the "computer says NO" protection measures should prevent this premature failure, never mind the computer optimised clutch modulation software.

(and since I put 253,000 miles on the dry clutch in the manual Galaxy, incl significent towing, all without failure, and the clutch was still 100% good, or showing zero signs of any impending failure or slippage,  when parked up, it should be possible to make a dry clutch survive towing duties if protected from the average abuse from the human interface)

Anyway, anyway, really really regretting my purchase of the dry DSG, rather than the apparently bullet proof wet DSG transmission.

sigh,

older

and

poorer

and

only slightly better informed
