to fabia VRS or not to fabia VRS

Featured Replies

hi all :)

i currently have a octy rs which i really like, comfy, fast, stylish etc.....but really since i got the car a year ago ive had manys a problem with it...new clutch, new ECU,two MAF sensors, three remaps due to faulty ECU.

What i really want to know is....should i trade it in and get a fabia RS?

be as honest as you want!!!

kit:)

What's important in a car for you :P

Chris

on the plus - economy, good performance (especially when mapped), crisp handling.

On the down - silly light colour seats, seueaks, rattles.

I came from a leon 20VT because i needed to save money on petrol - i do - down from £320 a month on optimax, to £170 a month on derv. that money buys a lot of deafness to the squeaks and rattles...

Oh, another down - rubbish standard brakes IMO - but easy to sort with a swap - plenty of threads on here.

Honest as I want ?

You've lost faith in the Octavia due to your run of bad luck - to be honest my thoughts on the Octavia are the same (see the "would you buy another" thread). Generally I tend to think if one vehicle in the range is poor then the rest could be the same - the dealers will certainally be the same.

For this reason I think you should get a Fiesta/Focus ST or other non-VAG car.

fair comment, good point. I would consider a focus RS for the next car if they were more tunable. flame suit on...

thanks for replies:)

but i live in dublin so it has to be sensible money in insure and tax.....most of the new cars ive looked at are just silly money over here,a new focus ST is twice the price as the UK,also three times the insurance and about ten times the tax!!!

The only conditions i have is that it has to be a hatchback or estate as i have a dog and must have a good bit of poke.

I saw a lovely mazda 3 over in the US with a standard 3.2 engine.....lovely looking car but all we get here is a 1.6!!!

kit:)

I personally have only had well documented problems with my Octavia....coil pack and nothing else. Fixed under warranty.

Have had it from new since 2002 and it's now covered 51k.

Would say my previous 2000 SLX TDi estate was better built though....even when some a**e hit us on the M4 it's didn't rattle or creak.

If you have had many problems it easy to loose confidense in your motor. I wouldn't buy another Renault after all the probs I had with a 19 16v.

Objectively it's probably better to change your car but at the same time not all Octavias are faulty as well, not all dealers are bad.

Fabia asn't got the biggest boot depending on size of dog, and dog hairs really stick to vRS not to mention muck.

Can understand anyone being hacked off with a brand if they get a bad one and/or their dealer is lousy but IMHO the general feedback over the years on the Octys has been that they have had few problems ... can only really think of yours and Nicks seemingly having constant problems. Also, my general feeling is that you can't ever really start to knock a car's reliability once you have made substantial mods to it - you take the risks to get the benefit (although it does sound as though yours has gone completley fubar :( )

Kit - did your problems start after the remap? If so, then maybe that is the root cause of the various problems. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the reliability of Skodas generally. :)

id definetly say that on website forums, blogs and reviews, people are more likely to be complaining than giving positive feedback. It is only natural. Looking on Briskoda there looks to be many happier people than unhappy ones. Even on other websites and review sites the skodas stand highly over the rest. I didnt even think about skoda until i read reviews and listened to others experiences. After I read and heard lots of good things about them i went for a test drive. I was not let down at all.

also JD power survey... skoda in 2nd place overall. they can't be bad at all. compared to other brands like ford, citroen, renault, vauxhall etc. this maybe due to the fact that more fords etc are sold and therefore more people likely to complain. But still skoda does share components with the Better branded cars and generally better higher build quality without doubt.

my problems started when the car i bought started driving like a bag of poo!!! took about six visits to the garage before i sought help elsewhere only to discover that my "standard" car had infact been chipped by superchips and an awful one at that!!! Hence the new ECU.

The car still seems to have the same problem its always had.....that is sometimes theres just no umph, this normaly happends whens when theres a temp varient,it was taken to westward where i was told thats it probably the temp sensor, only to be told by the garage that that just isnt possible!!!

When its good by god is it good....but when its bad its dangerous.....you put your foot down it gets to the turbo zone then no acceleration!!!......i give in, i just want rid of it!!! I asked the garage about a deal to trade in against a new furby RS and they quoted me a figure 7k off what i paid for it a year ago!!! Was hoping they would do me a deal as they know how unhappy ive been!!!

plus it seems to be a magnet for theiving scumbags!!!

Don't believe the doom mongers - I love my Fabia VRS

It hasn't been 100% reliable - but at least it hasn't left me stranded. Same can't be said for Alfa's, Ford's MG-Rovers or Vauxhalls (I do love MG-Rovers despite having severe problems with one).

Only thing is it is not a family car. boot is not bad for the size, but small. Seat trim is awful and rear brakes squeal (can be rectified by dealer though).

But the surprise and woo factor is hard to beat.

so its not the actually brand of cars or even the car itself. clearly your particular car has a fault.....and if what your saying is true it is obvious if there is no power. ttake the mechanic for a spin in it ... let them drive it. take it to another dealer if they don't sort it.I cant believe you have not done this yet!!!

if the depreciation deosn't make you wanna do it then think if you sell it ....the next person along the line will actually percevier and let the dealership sort it....they will get a decent car and you will just have a sad story.

patience. go to another dealer...talk to skoda uk......contact watchdog......for god sake grow some balls!

you said be honest

With a dog etc you'll have to consider the lack of space in the boot compared to the Octy - the Octy has a massive boot for it's class & it's probably about twice the size of the Furb.

You can have great fun in both cars assuming they behave like they should.

I'd take one for a test drive though, check out how you feel about it, whether the dog fits well, the usual :)

Hi Mate

What about an estate and go for the Fabia PD100?

Then with a remap you could still be looking around 140ishbhp

That way you have room for the dog and other bits.

If you go for the Elegance then you would have the Black interior?

Just a suggestion.

Oh the Octavia thing I do understand you can get what they call "Friday Cars" but if you see the amount of Octavia`s about that are Taxis it must be for a reason.

I feel bad for you Goochie but I have had faith in the Skoda`s for so long that I find it hard to loose that faith.

Having just bought another Skoda I hope I dont.

Sarah

Have you considered other marques? ;) Plenty of reliable cars out there which are fun to drive and meet your requirements :D

balls?!!! i'l give you balls!!!.....i spent five years in the royal marines!!! you dont get balls bigger than mine!!!

Its the typical modern car.....you take it to the garage and all they do is plug it into vagom and the computer says noo!!! if a fault doesnt show up then they just keep saying the car is fine, as what happend with the superchip they never found!!! they have driven it but because it has power when they drive it they say its fine!!!!

Its not the brand i dont like,id have another RS no probs its just that we dont have the choice over here that you have in the uk.There are only about 6 octy RS's for sale at the moment and most are high milers, theres only been one fabia RS for sale in more than 6 months. If you take the car to one dealer all they do is ring the garage where it came from! its avery small car community here.

Anyway so should i get rid and get a furby RS or keep the octy? That is the question!!!......heeelp!!!:)

K:)

lol being in the marines dont give you big balls........the mumps do!

You were only part time in the Marines...you only did 5 years!

why don't you speak to Skoda? say you are unhappy and the dealer is poo.?

oh your a cheeky one arent you?!!! i think being kicked in them could make yours bigger.....how about it?!!! but finding yours to boot might be a problem though!!!!:)

but all they say is that they cant find a problem so there is no problem!!!....to me even the slight varient in outside temp effects the car!!!!

Does being in the marines give you this intuition? similar to being in the Navy lol.

just kidding we all like a joke on here.

Am i being nieve? can't you just come over to the UK and buy the car of your choice and take back? is it not that simple?

If there is such a shortage in Dublin you should be able to move your locally easy.

I'm sure I'll be put right on this!

Statistically if you want reliable don't buy European.

If you must buy European, Skoda are the most reliable manufacturer - FACT.

I'm not saying they're without their faults, but you can't argue with the numbers...

I think this comment is too generalised to be taken seriously.

StevRS is correct by saying thats statistics don't lie.

to be honest there is nothing better than the JD power survey as it's all facts based over a large populations with variety in it.

The dealers are really good around sheffield and most others are great too. they are proud to be part of the skoda group. it's just one or too that let the side down.

car delaership are notoriusly bad any way and IMO the skoda ones a the best of the bunch.

if i was to buy a car over in the uk then when i brought it back over here i would have to pay VRT (vehicle registration tax) which unlike the uk is not about 70 squiddlies but about 25% of the value of the car!!! thus making the car more exspensive!!! Have a look at this web site.....www.carzone.ie and have a look at the irish prices, youll be well shocked:( a new fabia over here equates to over 17k in sterling....thats about 5k over the uk price, plus the spec is lower!!!:(

So to buy a furby RS over here it would be 12k trade in value, leaving me to pay 4k to clear the fianace then take out new fianace for over 26k(by the time youve added the options you want) so really your looking at paying about 20k in sterling all told!!!
