High idle after driving...?

Featured Replies

Just been down the motorway, 65-70mph. Parked up on the drive and allowed the car to idle a couple of minutes, only to find its idling higher, around 1k mark. Never happened before either, so just switched off as usual because it never sounded any different.

Its a 2013 Rapid 1.4 tsi, serviced regular as clockwork with me. Hopefully my little Rapid isnt letting me down :(

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Sure it's not the fans kicking in or air-con, both combined can raise engine speed slightly.?

The fans do cut in and i noticed yesterday they were also on when the higher idle occured.

Ive just never had this happen until yesterday, it just got me wondering that was all. I'll keep my eye on it today and see what happens next as all was fine this morning.

Rapid 1.6tdi 2014, (not EA189'd!)

I do get this occasionally, have noticed it under the following circumstances

1) Aircon going full blast when stationary and idling (sometimes, not always)

2) Car in gear and rolling forward slightly with clutch pedal down - engine revs rise from 750 to approx 900rpm. They die down if I stop, even on the footbrake. Guess its the EMS deciding I am about to drive off! My brother in law refers to this as the "anti stall", very useful for slow-speed maneouvring, I don't need the throttle at all - saves a lot of clutch wear.

3) I give my car a good run every couple of weeks. If I don't, then after couple of weeks around town driving the engine idles at approx 900rpm instead of 750rpm. Fixed by a nice day out, or driving using the handbooks instructions for clearing the DPF light  with the engine working above about 2000rpm(4th gear, 60+mph, continually for 20 mins or more, roughly speaking)

In the hot weather (outside temp 25 or more) then the fan does stay on for a couple of mins, esp if the engine has been working hard (pulling caravan etc.)

No air con was on at the time, this was at midnight so pretty cool at the time and my car is dsg.

It could be down to the fans cutting in, as all is back to normal and the next day i drove how i usually do and it never happened.

Point number 3 i do exactly the same except weekly a good run is needed no matter what anyone says.

Just to be clear, the car is petrol (1.4 TSI), i.e. no Diesel Particulate Filter fitted?

Yeah its definitely a petroleumo :)

So service regular as clockwork.

How many km / miles has it done in 5 years.

What has been done other than Oil & Filter changes and Brake Fluid.

?

When were the Spark Plugs Replaced, the Air Filter, the Fuel Filter?

Is the battery still good, not reaching end of life?

I serviced it in June sometime. But i purchased it Feb and it apparently had been serviced.

I just dumped the oil and all filters and replaced with Castrol oil and Bosch filters all round along with NGK plugs (I dont believe in scrimping and scraping). And its due a service again around 37k.

The battery turns over as anyone would expect even after standing so no issues here either.

My car now has 33k miles on the clock, i bought it with 28k.

Good.

So in February it was filled with and running Winter Spec Petrol and that changed to Summer Spec maybe March / April depending what country you are in.

So just a question of paying attention to how long the Coolant Fan / Coolant pump runs on after drives in different weather / temperatures, and what changes as Autumn sets in if anything.

In another few months we will be back on winter grade petrol.

Just watch when starting that the rpm goes up to about 1,100 rpm and drops to about 800 in 49 seconds, and how the lights, heater or any battery load / demand affects the RPM.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm getting similar with one of my cars. Skoda Rapid 1.6 diesel.  Reaches operating temp (90c) in about 5 minutes (2 miles) . Initially stop start works then it stops working. Car sits at 1000 rpm instead of 750. When it idles fats the stop start does not work. I switch off then on and the car idles at 750...next time I stop same thing, 1000 rpm  switch off start again , repeat.  Engine sounds fine, fuel consumption good. NO AC operating. I am a bit concerned that the operating temperature comes up as quick as it does.
