I’ve lost count how many I’ve seen on the roads. 

 

I get a lot may be hire holiday cars. But then I’ve seen many which have been personalised etc. 

 

Ireland sure has has a love for Skoda, as does the pope. 

 

Cracking value for money over here I guess with all the added taxes IRISH people have to pay.

Skoda as a brand is hugely popular in Ireland in recent years and I know many people that have moved away from premium brands to Skoda.  Our roads are not the best and I think the suspension set up and overall durability is a big factor.  The Octavia and Superb sell in huge numbers.  The Superb is now a very regular choice for a lot of company car drivers but there are a lot of private sales over here also.  You're very correct about the taxes we have to pay!!  VRT (vehicle registration tax) is a massive issue for us as this tax is charged on every new car and really impacts the choice of options as some optional extras can attract huge VRT.  As an example, my own 150tdi DSG Superb in Style spec (SE L equivalent more or less) has a list price of over €42K here (approx. £37.5K stg).  I did spec the same model on the UK configurator before  (even including extras to bring the two models in line) and it's about £4-£5k stg more than an equivalent Superb in the UK which is a lot!!

I was over there last week, but didn't see many Superbs.  There did seem to be a fair few Octavias, though.

 

I was shocked at some of the 'screen prices on dealers' forecourts.  I'm not sure if that included VRT, or not.

What is to stop you buying a car elsewhere in Europe, driving it for a few days (now used) then importing it - as many British drivers used to when we had car tax on new cars.

You still have to pay VRT when you register it in the country and if the car is less than 7 months old and i think 7k km on it, you still have to pay VAT on the RRP....

On my travels through Europe this year the most Superb S3's I saw were in Germany, so many it really was noticable.

Yes, VRT must be paid on imports as well.  The government will always make sure they don't lose out!  Importing from the UK is very popular here at the moment although personally, I don't see any huge advantage, when you factor in the total costs of importing and of course VRT plus clocking is also widespread even on newer cars.   Although the exchange rate is particularly attractive now for importing into Ireland, the overall gain is only marginal.  You might get a better spec car in some cases.  The Superb actually has a slightly higher spec in Ireland at the moment compared to the UK so no real gain there either.

VRT and VAT (on non-commercial cars) would be included on the forecourt prices.  I'm not surprised you were shocked!
