UK Car sales drop in July 2018 compared too July 2017

Featured Replies

UK car sales were up 1.2% compared to July 2017.

The BBC article refers to UK car manufacturing.

It is predicted that the August figures will be double or even triple last year and year to date Jan-Aug will be higher than 2017

All due to WLTP as last of non compliant vehicles are registered

September is unlikely to see a new registration rush as there is unlikely to be many stock WLTP cars that can be preregistered, so September expected to be poor compared to 2017

Agree heard the same about the Sept sales on compliant WLTP cars. Production volumes are down and hence some of the extended delivery lead-times being experienced.

?

Where are all these 'New First Registered Ford Fiesta' in the UK, are they in people garages and driveways, car dealership forecourts or storage areas because i fail to see that many New Plate Fiesta in car parks, supermarket car parks, airport car parks or driving on the roads up and down the UK.

Most i see are in Ford Dealerships?

Pre-registered because Ford don't have the WLTP testing done yet???

Ye but they have been the top 'First Registered car' for years, in Scotland most favourite, and in the UK.

So lots go to Fleet like NHS, and Hire Companies, but then they seem not to be everyplace compared to cars that have half as many 'First Registrations'.

Look at a Fiat /  Arnold Clark Dealership and see just how many Fiat 500 there are , new and Pre-reg ones.

There really needs to be a SMMT figure for how many cars were 'Sold to somebody other than the Car Company selling to themselves,

or actually 'Leased' to the public / buyers and is actually paid for and taxes into the HMRC and not just

'Management / Demonstrators' out cheap to the Manufacturers Finance Company / Bank and soon to be sold as 'Used Cars' with Tax Breaks to the Dealerships / Manufacturers.

SMMT seem to ignore that Motability is the biggest group buyer in the UK, buying and leasing to their customers for 3 years.

Many losing their cars as they lose PIP, then they appeal and win the award back and can get a Motability car on Lease again.

The Government backing the couple of grand as someones car is taken back, then they win their appeal, get the back £58 a week and interest and then lease another car for 3 years.

?

How many less Motability Finance Owned cars are being 'First Registered' each of the past 4 years?

Lots of reasons car 'First Registrations drop',  Not just the Economy or Dieselgate or Brexit or WLTP,

maybe cars should be better to keep beyond 3 years without failing the first MOT's on stupid little things.

Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) exists to support and promote the interests of the UK automotive industry at home and abroad.

So not really in their interests to say anything that doesn't promote sales.

Last thing they want are customer thinking twice about changing cars, especially with Brexit looming.

Arnold Clark Pre-tax profits down, but they seem to be doing pretty well really.  Used car sales.

pay out 3.5 miliion for the CEO 's salary seems to show that they are doing OK....

More info needed from the SMMT or the DVLA,

is there a drop in the number of cars no longer registered in the UK, increased number on a SORN or scrapped?

That is what the UK Government wanted is it not, less cars on the roads.

More using Public Transport.

Are there more bus, tram, train, bike users and people walking instead of driving, or maybe more car sharing going on?

Times move on, Skype and Conference calls, and mobile calls etc, less need for sales reps hitting it up and down the country spending all day on the road meeting customers.

Embrace the new technology, and home workers just need carpet slippers to go from home to their office.

Both probably.

The XF is looking dated now, the XJ doesn't sell many anyway so it would take a much of a numerical reduction in sales to show a big % drop.

More worrying would be the XE drop since that's their newest cheapest model and I'd have expected that it would form the bulk of their sales.

The Pace models seem to be doing well on anecdotal evidence (the numbers I see).

I wouldn't be shocked to see them go the way of Ford US and drop their saloons to sell the SUVs only.

SMMT at least had a spokeswoman appearing on the telly that seemed a bit less defensive than the usual 'top man' at the SMMT.

So the big question, 'how many first registrations' more could there have been if the Supplier / Manufacturer of 2 of the biggest selling models the Golf & Polo had got them to dealers if the WLTP carry on had not caught them out, and the Audi, SEAT and Skoda that they are also responsible for.

good discounts to be had now on prereg
