Selling private plate

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a bit of advice if possible.

We've had the wife's car for nearly 4 years now.  It came with a private plate which is of no relevance to us so we want to sell it and have a normal plate on the car (a 2005 Ignis).

I've contacted a couple of places via the DVLA website to have it valued and it's come in between £300 and £400.  I've never had a private plate before let alone buy or sell one.  I'd be interested to know what you folks think is the best way to sell it onto someone who might find it more relevant.  If anyone has advice on possible pitfalls and things to avoid, again I'd be appreciative of your suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew.

Have a look at some of the dealers like Regtransfers.co.uk

Have been in a similar situation before and sold via them so I could my own plate on. You can list it with them and they'll contact you if they have interest and offers. Can't remember what the % was but it worked out well.

You could also list on eBay, I keep an eye on 'cherished' plates on there. Get it on retention and you'll be ready to go.

I reckon I'll go through a broker as it might make things a bit easier and save me the hassle of doing things myself.  Thanks for the advice.

You'll still need to handle the retention bit yourself, to remove it from the current vehicle.

All the broker gives is another, and possibly more visible, selling platform.
