Octavia 1.9 TDI engine noise

Featured Replies

Hello,

New to the forum so hope this is in the right place.

I recently bought a 2005 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI DSG and have noticed it makes a certain repetitive noise until it's warmed up (almost like a scraping noise), I'll attach a sound clip for clarification.

Thanks in advance,

It's making a reasonable attempt to sound like an old bit of farm machinery.

I'm not familiar with the DSG setup but I would want a professional opinion sooner rather than later.

Have you timing belt or chain? That's very noisy for cold start. If chain get it checked! 2010 Octavia just cost me 3000 euro to fix after chain jumped when vag tensioner gave up.

I only bought the car about 2 weeks ago. According to the service history the 'toothed belt' was replaced at a Skoda Dealer at 97000m, 4 years ago. It has now done 117000m. How often should this be changed? Would it be recommended to get it checked now?

Thanks in advance

Well that's not it so thank God, like a timing belt every 60k will be having mine checked. Have you a good independent to check it?

So the toothed belt isn't the timing belt? I will get my local garage to check it over soon.

Toothed belt is your timing belt, so at least that's done. Get it checked it doesn't sound healthy might be something simple.

I have a slightly better recording, still not sure what it is however, the car is booked in the garage tomorrow and I will see what they say...

Hi all,

Have been told this is the start of problems with the DMF, looks like an expensive fix.

Yeah sounds like DMF needs replacing as its starting to rattle.

Is it worth spending the money on? Recently got it for £1700, it has done 117'000 and drives superbly however, it needs a DMF at a cost of around £750 And in a few months the timing belt and DSG oil change are due.

Yes but only if you plan to keep it for say another 3 years to ensure you get maximum returns out of your repairs.  Also there's still plenty of life left in the engine as they are good for 200-300k easily with regular oil and scheduled timing belt changes.

Okay, thanks. I'd probably keep the car until it doesn't run anymore so I'll consider getting the work done.
