Octavia 1.9d rattle

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have tagged this on as a reply to a previous topic, but being new on here, not sure if I've done right.

I have a 1.9d Octavia, 56 plate, according to dealer it has DMF. I have an intermittent rattle, at idle, which sounds like a loose internal in exhaust system. a stethoscope gives a strong sound on the cat and a little stronger on the bell housing. I have removed the exhaust from turbo, and the noise is the same, does this sound like a DMF breakdown? I've not had to deal with many of these, but I know they have a fearful reputation. When the rattle occurs, you can detect a slight shudder of the engine. Any ideas please?

If its coming from the gearbox area it will likely  be the dmf, an experienced mechanic should be able to tell just by listening with the bonnet open as the rattle noise is quite distinctive.

Ok, thanks very much. I'd pretty much come to that conclusion, just after a bit of confirmation really. I've not had dealings with many DMF's, a bit after my time! Do you think solid is the way to go? seems to be the cheapest option

It may be the cat is breaking up internally and causes the engine to stumble with blocked exhaust, then again it could be the DMF.

As posted, a mechanic should be able to diagnose quickly.

Whether you wish to spend a bit on an SMF conversion, lots on a DMF or simply sell the car depends on how long you wish to keep it.
