Balljoint nuts turning balljoint thread.

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain why I`ve just bought new nuts from a dealer for the wishbone balljoints and the balljoint thread itself is ****ing the threads up on the nut.. it gets so far then starts to get insanely tight.. ARGH.  They are not brand new balljoints granted, but they are not rusted and ive cleaned the threads....  Is there a trick to putting this nut on without the balljoint thread turning with it too?   Do I really have to remove the damn hub nut and take the drive shaft out of the hub and impact gun these balljoint nuts on??? or is there another way....

I was expecting the nut to just nicely go onto the thread.

looks like I`m gonna have to get brand new ball joints because the thread does it with both nuts I have.. the nut gets so far then seems to go tight.  I guess it was put on with an impact gun probably and the thread was ****ed up.  so annoying because the joints are still great and firm.

Doesn't the bottom ball joint have a pinch bolt arrangement?

Anyway, if you ever need to stop a ball joint from turning all you have to do is put it in the joint and apply pressure upwards against the spring with a car jack.

I tried this.. but the nut gets so far then just starts turning the balljoint. I think there must be a problem with the thread and its just cross threading or something.

It sounds as though your new nut has a damaged thread. If it starts cleanly on the ball joint thread there is no reason it won't run down fully. I had to apply pressure to the bottom of the ball joint when fitting new joints earlier this month, once the two tapers are applying pressure the joint doesn't spin. Just to be sure, break the joint again and make sure the ball joint thread is clean and maybe get a new nut.

Yes I was thinking this.  The new nuts were from a proper dealer, not ebay..  I have ordered a new set of balljoints and they come with nyloc nuts..  So they should be fine.

Also do you remove the driveshafts from the hub?  I found that if I apply pressure to the bottom of the wishbone end the nut is pushing against the underside of the end of the driveshaft, you have to get the nut on so far first...
