Clutch troubles

Featured Replies

Morning all. My 2010 1.9td Octy has got me scratching my head.

Yesterday the wife was reporting that she was having trouble engaging gears and the biting point for the clutch was on the floor. She got back from Haydock to Cumbria OK but stopped by the roadside just a few miles from home.

Low fluid level I thought. So I went out withe the tow rope and some fluid, found the resevoir low, topped it up, pumped the pedal and all was well again. I had the car up in the air and found no leakage from the braking system , no signs of fluid fron the gearbox/engine split (Thank god it's not one of those barsweward concentric slave jobbies) and no leaks from the clutch master inside the cabin.

But here's the thing, overnight the pedal went ''soft'' again requiring a few pumps to get back to normal. And it's been normal now for a few hours.

I'm thinking it needs a new slave or master, more likely master? What do you think, anyone had this before?

I note that the master looks a bugger to swap? Yes/No? Any other ideas to determine what it might be? If I hold the pedal to the floor with my foot it holds its pressure seemingly forever.....

Cheers

If it's like the 2005 1.9, the master is in the back of the pedal and slave on the gearbox. Unless I got them the wrong way around again. I never did either with my own hands. Garage had to bleed when I had pedal one swapped. Used to get low/dropped pedal, turned out the one on gearbox had split, the spring inside was visible.

Thanks gav. I've decided to change the master as if the slave was giving these problems then there would be oil all over the show. Fingers crossed!

It's dead on this forum. Is there a better UK forum? Maybe I should join a VW forum as this is all the same **** as a Golf etc.....

Julian.

This is what my slave looked like

That spring should be shorter and held in by a rubber cover.

There is a lot of good information on this forum and plenty of knowledgable owners.
