Drivers side wiper problem

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2010 Fabia and yesterday (when raining) only the passenger front wiper blade was working.

Upon very brief inspection ther drivers side wiper was in tact, would move for me manually but appeared to have no resistance at all and no power to it.

Anyone have any experience of this or know a fix?

thanks

Tighten the retaining nut, if its not that check that the drop link has not fallen off the motor drive, my MK1 jumped off but it had done 16 years and 325000 miles, mushed back on easily and fell of again just as easily, making it oval with a pair of Mole grips secured it in place.

The links do wear quickly and replacements are cheap at around £3 or so but on eBay, stainless clips can be purchased for a similar amount a pair and they are fiddly but clip over the existing part (Or new) and prevent the link from popping off again. They are meant to be a stop-gap repair but as they are stainless and won't corrode, they are at least, semi- permanent. I have used one for a few years now.

To fix, you need to remove the wiper arms and that plastic scuttle panel to gain enough access to repair/replace the part. There will be a few extra bits of rubber and plastic to remove so take care to place them somewhere safe and fit everything properly but its not actually hard.

The most difficult bit is removing the arms as they can be quite well stuck on. A lifting/pulling tool will be the easiest way but otherwise, gentle taps on the arms both from above and below, to loosen, preferably with a rubber or wooden mallet. Try to avoid a metal hammer as you may damage a spline.

Also, note the correct side of each wiper arm as they are not transferable like the blades and test they are on the correct spline position prior to fully tightening the nuts again, by wash/wipening the screen and watching where the blades start and park.

Thank you for the advice.

I had a look myself and failed at removing the wiper arms, as you have said they were very stuck on!

I took it to the garage due to the urgency, they diagnosed the linkage being broken. Unfortunately they could only source replacement parts from Skoda and they quoted (in addition to 30/40mins labour) £149!!!!

That'll be for the who;e set of wiper bits n bobs. the link is around £3. I know as I have had 2! The second one is still unused as I fitted the stop gap clip. I could even have claimed for the second one under warranty but its such a faff. They need to strip and inspect the part, then get the go ahead (Or not) Then they will replace the part that costs a few quid, whilst spending hundreds on labour and engineers reports. I said to the dealer it'd be easier just to supply the new part at a loss but they said it doesn't work like that!

Of course, I am assuming it is just the one link gone. The drivers side will fail and the ball joint on the link is upside down so soon as it wears, it pops off. If it was the other way up, it might stay put better, with gravity!

I will try getting the part number if that helps..

Ok, part number, 5J0955325

Thats the drivers side linkage and costs around £3 from Skoda.
