Gearbox failure?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all, I own a 2004 Octavia 1.8t 4x4 Elegance on 64k miles. Over the past few days the car has developed a whining noise and the car vibrates under acceleration, all wheels are balanced and the wheel bearings are fine. No signs of any leaks and the last time I checked the oil level it was fine, are the five speed gearboxes prone to failure? Any help and advice appreciated.

When was the 4x4 Hadlex oil and filter last changed?

How do the tyres look - same tread depth on all 4 wheels?

Had a Subaru AWD in last week where the car was driving, handling and vibrating badly for several months.

The suggestion was to fit two new front tyres and do four wheel alignment to fix the car.

Later I noticed that it actually had different size tyres on the front ( 215 ) to the rear tyres. ( 225 )

Customer then remembered that the problems started after he had the two rear tyres fitted.

Four new tyres of the correct size (215 ) and an alignment check later and guess what?

Don't think he will be going back to the place that fitted the two rear tyres in a hurry.

So check your tyres carefully.

Thanks AG Falco

yes the 5 speed is not very strong and its the diff that can fail
