Steering feels worse?

Featured Replies

I got my Octavia at 90,600 miles. The steering felt quite tight and to me, pretty good. However, I took it on a 360 mile round trip over the weekend and it felt very twitchy and a bit washy, like I had to concentrate a lot more on steering and always use both hands. There is about 10mm of free play in the steering wheel before there is any resistance when the steering wheel is dead straight. I decided it was probably due to the wet roads that it felt a bit odd, but this morning it definitely still felt odd, almost a bit too light.

Any ideas? It just doesn't feel as tight as it did 6k miles ago when I got it. I must add, the car gets subjected to quite big bumps and potholes on a daily basis going up and down the track from my house.

Check tyre pressures, worn tyres, crap cheap tyres, worn track rod ends, wheel alignment.

+1 I have just had a similar experience, my steering has always felt really good until a few weeks back when it started to feel a little disconnected and like you have said I felt I had to concentrate harder on my steering than normal,

Had my tracking checked and the the front alignment was out by a few degrees, once that was sorted steering feels as good as it was again,

I cant remember hitting anything that could have knocked it out of alignment although I do have to drive over a curb on occasion where I work and with the state of roads even a small pothole can be enough to knock it out of alignment,

With you driving on a potholed track daily my guess would be this is the cause.
