Help - Strange gearbox noises (Polo 1.4 16v)

Featured Replies

I'm in need of a bit of advice on SWMBOs Polo (hey, its a fabia underneath all the vw badges)

At the weekend she somehow managed to stall it (I think, but I wasn't there)while parallel parking when out shopping. Rather than the usual noise you get in a stall, she says it made a really loud bang. It seems to drive okay, but now when you engage a gear (either engine running or not), clutch depressed, there is I suppose what can only be described as a clank (perhaps mechanical/metallic sounding).

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? The noise is a bit like something knocking against a heat shield, but being gearbox related I'm a concerned it may be something more serious. It happens in all gears just as the gearstick reaches the end of its travel.

Probably going to book it in with the dealer to check it out anyway, but any knowledge in advance would be useful.

Thanks

Difficult to say without hearing it. But clutch problems are very common on the Polo.

I don't think its the clutch. Had a play at lunch today, seems to be clunking from beneath the car, like something is knocking the heat shield/exhaust, sort of mid position below the gearstick. I don't know what it looks like down there, so don't know what the possible options are.

Could it be that something has shifted and the gear linkages are now closer to the heat shield......could the loud noise be something like an engine mount coming loose/shearing?? It seems to drive okay, no drop in performance or anything. She says it *might* be a bit noisier at higher speeds.......

Will leave it with the dealers tomorrow and they will see if they can fit it in.
