Silent Skoda Felicia

Hi All,

I've finished a 1,5 years long rebuild of my Felly, and during this process I did complete sound deadening of the floor, trunk, roof, doors and the engine bulkhead (both from inside and outside).

All done with proper sound deadening mats system.
I'd like to know if anyone tried to do this with success.

The thing is, that while the sound deadening works significantly on the sound the doors make when they close (sound nicely now),

the engine noise didn't get dampened at all (I didn't do any measurements, but I surely would notice a significant difference).

There is one single element in the engine bulkhead that wasn't dampened, and that's the cursed ventilation unit.
Looks like it'll need a lot of sound deadening to isolate the engine noise going through that to the interior, and as a secondary priority I think that properly deadening the bonnet should also help a bit with this.
I was also wondering if someone tried to soundproof the airbox? As i understand majority of engine noise comes from the intake, and the airbox does look like a possible analog sound amplifier for the intake air noise.

If anyone's interested I could make a topic on the Felly restoration effect.

Hey Mariosti

I am interested in your project. Hopefully you documented it from start to finish with lots of photos.

As for soundproofing the ventilation unit (engine side) you will not gain a lot doing it. It is more important to isolate it from the heat of the engine during summer. The air will be a lot cooler.

You didn't mention what noise are you experiencing.

Airbox tranmits mechanical noise of engine = noise you can hear from outside. If that noise bcome queter once you turn heater from cold to hot, soundproofing ventilation will help.

If it's low frequency noise, dependend on engine load, it's noise from engine vibrations. Engine mounts play big role here. I have experienced that hard mounts made in china make all worse. Maybe tinkering with this can make difference. What I always wondered was, why 1.6 is much quieter than 1.3. 1.6 have different right engine mount and larger center gearbox mount. I tried to replace factory mount with 1.6, but it's shifted to side, so it doesn't fit. And i don't have enough resources to modify it.

Btw, do you have "dynamic damper", cylindrical weight on right drive shaft? It makes big difference above 3000RPM
