I have seen these.

One got ordered so we could see it at the last place that I worked.

We laughed and threw it to 1 side.

I have done some research on these.

The metal ones work a treat.

That is if they fit at all.

They make a superb noise if you fit it with the Forge DV

Sounds lovely.

Had one fitted to my sons car and drove home with the windows open (even though it was raining) as it did sound soooo goood.

I bought a £40 ebay one and it was truely awful, made the car sound like a Nova with a drilled air box. Also resulted in less torque at the top end (confirmed with VAG-COM readings).

You get what you pay for.

My £40 e-bay one is metal, fits a treat, sounds good, and does "NOT" have any bad effects on the performance at all.

There are so many conflicting reports on all CAI's as to if they work or not, be they dear or cheap.

So I will stay with the cheap one until it is proven either way, anyway, it works for me.

Sound good, filter out just about **** all except bricks.

The £40 e-bay one does not have a metal filter, only the pipework is metal, the filter is a normal K&N style one.

That I have changed for a genuine K&N one.

As soon as its enters the turbo its going to be heated right back up again. There is no point messing around with crappy filters. I see turbo's everyday that have sucked in dust etc and its not pretty, when you have something spinning at close to 130,000 rpm and bits of dirt hitting it the effects are nasty!

Because the colder it is before it gets into the turbo the more volume of air you will have.

i think you will find the performance gains are minimal if any!

I think its just like me saying if you wash the mud from you wheel arches it will give you 10 extra bhp, and i bet some fool would do it and it truley feel like he had +10bhp!

It (the CAI not mud washing) will be benificial if fitted before a custom remap.

All depends on what else has been done to the car. An air filter might well do very little on its own, but as part of a package it will do something, especially if the std set up is no longer able to flow the amount of air required.

i would be more concerned with my turbo surviving than having my car sound like a paxo though! If your going to do something it has to be done properly in my opinion, no cheap ebay rubbish

As long as you replace the supplied filter with a branded one then the risk will be no greater than a more expensive kit.

cant fault the one on my vRS...

they use a JR cotton gauze filter, stainless pipe connection to the MAF housing and very well built stainless housing round the filter which creates a box when the bonnet is closed. this helps keep heat soak to a minimum. I have also added 80mm ducting from the front passenger side grille (milotec) to the inlet in the wing which feeds the standard airbox. This flows a good flow of air from the front of the car direct to the filter.

the filter needs cleaning every 10K miles or so (i usually go by visual inspection) and using any of the cotton filter cleaners is fine. Jabba have however developed the dirt retention oil with JR so after applying said oil you bake the filter (yes bake). This changes the viscocity (SP?) of the oil and stops it damaging the MAF if you use too much.

it sounds awesome, lovely deep roar which changes to a roaring whistle as the turbo comes on song. With the Bailey recirc i have theres a very satisfying dump of boost (James at JBS thought i was running an atmos dump valve at the RR last year) when you let off / change gear.

They are not cheap @ £250 all in but are very very high quality, you also get a small JR breather filter for the pipework that normally connects to the standard airbox. I wouldnt use anything else now and i have in the past used K&N, PiperCross and stainless mesh filters on my R19 16v.
