Intermittent power steering fail on my Fabia 2

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone help please.

My 2008 Fabia 1.4 power steering fails . Yellow steering wheel light comes on dash then the assistance stops .if I switch the ignition off and restart it the assistance returns . It's doing it more or less all the time now . Can anyone help please

Have you checked the fluid reservoir level, If it is low, might have a leak on the system

If topping it up solves the problem (for time being) then that's a start

However if quickly goes down (when in use) then need to investigate and fix leak

If your car is 10 years old, when was steering fluid last changed (if ever) ?

A quick tip is to suck out as much as possible using cheap syringe (like a small turkey baster) then refill, won't change all the fluid, but will allow you to get more good clean fluid in.

Hi john I hadn't even give it a thought to be honest, I thought it was going to be electrical as it's intermittent and switching the ignition on and off resets it for a short time. But many thanks for taking the time to help please

Often its due to weak old battery. New battery required.

At that age, the battery is probably French-Connected!

Also, the power steering fluid reservoir is often overlooked as they are a pain to access. Underneath the battery so in many instances, the battery needs to be removed to check.

Hi thanks again for replying , I did put a brand new battery on it last week but unfortunately no difference.

However there is a twist !!   I forgot to mention that the ABS light is on  and when fault code read it states " internal pump motor fault"

Now could these be linked ??

Do you have ESP, too? This is linked to the ABS, I believe.

I would almost certainly be checking the power steering reservoir as I have heard owners going "Dry" On these!  You will be told they are meant to be maintenance free but in reality, there is no such thing. It is a pain, but check it!

I had the same problem and symptoms a few months ago on my 2011 Fabia Greenline.  It was traced to a faulty steering angle sensor/airbag slip ring which cost about £300 to replace at my local dealer.

Hi Mrgf , yes I do have Abs light coming on and also the red handbrake/ brake fluid light on , I had it code read and it indicates a Abs motor pressure fault but I couldn't understand how it would affect the steering.   Many many thanks though for taking the time to read and advise me
