I've bought a Jag...................

Featured Replies

Not sure what came upon me, but I've bought an old Jaguar:thinking:

These are now seriously cheap and contrary to common conventions this one appears to be fully-functional:thumbup:

Unfortunately only the smaller 2.5 l (~200 BHP), but very a smooth Autobox (ZF), a nice wood & leather interior and 6 cylinders.

The downsides are MPG (low 20's), a lack of modern amenities - Bluetooth / ability to play MP3's / D.A.B and relative lack of go (0-60 ~10 seconds).

On the plus side it drives well, offers a refreshing change from my  current VAG oriented stable (Yeti & Toledo) and is just a bit "different".

No doubt any major mechanical maladies will effectively write it off, but good fun whilst ever it lasts!

I pine these days for a ‘wafting’ suspension........not the worn out variety though.

How does it ride?.

Very well - no doubt as it has sensible sized 16" rims.

I've taken the liberty of fitting x4 Kumho winter tyres, as a previous RWD Lexus I owned some years back was a downright liability in the snow!

It came fitted with 4 cheap tyres (x2 Westlake and x2 Autogrip) so the Kumho KW27's are a considerable upgrade:thumbup:

How many miles?

More photos would be good.

My abiding memory of jags is worn ball joints and clunking suspension.

s/Jag/Ford Mundaneo. ;)

92k miles (has averaged 6150 miles / year over the last 15 years) and no obvious noise / clunking from the suspension.

By no means an expert (my first Jag), but understand the X type to be Mondeo based, whereas the S type shares it's chassis/drivetrain with a US Ford Lincoln LS.

I always think of on street parking issues with big cars in Britain, or maybe that’s just the holiday season.

What’s the year and model designation exactly?.

I bought one of these, a Type S, 2.5 litre with the 6 speed ZF box and loved the ambiance of it but the road tax of some £540 (?) a year just got silly.

Loved the wafting along though it did seem to get a bit wobble getting too far in to three figures.  The dream personified in the "Desert Rose" video....

2003 SE (?? base model) although it seems pretty well-equipped - full leather, electric memory seats, Sat-Nav, cruise, Autolights / wipers, parking sensors and power-folding mirrors being the highlights.

The Sat-nav is DVD based and the disc dates back to 2003:biggrin:

Slightly cheaper road tax for this pre-2005 car:thumbup:

Seems pretty planted at higher speeds and I agree the ambiance makes it a pleasant car to travel distance in.

The service history is a bit sparse, but when I had the winter's fitted it was clear the brakes were new all-round. The 'checkable' fluids are all fresh, although I'm unsure when the spark plugs where last changed (needs the intake manifold removing!!) and when the Autobox last had a fresh fluid / filter.

I've limited myself to refurbishing both remote fobs and replacing interior lights with LED.

Dipped beam is a bit poor, so will look to fit Osram Night-breakers (H7).

I did get a quote from an indie for a service, general check-over, spark plugs and fresh fluid/filter for the Autobox, but got north of £1k and decided to just drive it for a few months:thumbup:

just looking at S type R's on evilbay, they are crazy cheap!

Snap - also apparently easily tunable to 500 bhp:thumbup:

I've got a 2011 XJ 3.0D. Easily the best car I've owned, but the most expensive to maintain and least reliable.

The S Type is indeed based on the US Lincoln, and the SE was the "top spec" apart from the Sport. Imagine having a base spec with cloth seats in a Jag!! SE gave Leather, sunroof etc. If you have headlight washers then you also have the winter pack.

Another perspective on used Jags -

It's a Jaaaaag not a Jag ;-)

I drove an older 3.0 V6 S-type for a few days. It was lovely, really enjoyed it. everything worked (apart from the telly, no signal any more), although there wasn an ominous creak from the rear suspension. So very relaxing to drive, I found myself wafting around at 50mph. the total opposite to the BMW that makes you feel quite agressive.

Would love an XJ-R, it's one of my bucket-list cars.

I love my XJ. If I had to change it, it would be for either an XJ Supersport LWB with the V8 supercharged or the XJ R 575. I haven't lived a car as much as this, even with its faults.

Hope the S type is going well!!
