What's the best oil

Featured Replies

So many oils to choose from, what's the best top up oil for a 2010 skoda superb 1.8 petrol automatic.  Any experts. The manual quotes vw numbers which are confusing.

The same as the one already in?

Ha ha , any serious replies please

The Recommended oil is VW 504/507 for Fixed or Variable Servicing, and by VW Castrol.  so 5 w 30 FS Long Life.

Not the best of oils, or best for your car though IMO.  Long Life Oil, short life TSI's.

So maybe go VW 502  so 5w 40 Full Synthetic from anyone, always going to be as good as Castrol 5w 40 FS.  or Quantum.

Fixed Servicing.

So 9,400 miles / 372 days what ever comes first.

If you do lots of miles and must use Long Life Oil then 5w 30 FS LL it needs to be to VW 504 / 507 spec.  Asda / Comma or anyones is fine.

Who says dealers use Quantum Longlife oil?

I'm pretty certain mine doesn't. And I find they are reluctant to divulge beyond "long life" and I wouldn't trust them to tell me the truth anyway. I suspect only a couple of people actually know exactly what goes into their bulk tanks.

They will source the cheapest oil possible (that meets the required specs).

They do use Quantum and they also sell it at the service centres, Quantum is now made by Fusch so it's decent oil, I really can't see a VAG dealer throwing in some cheap TripleQX from ECP can you?

Cos' it's heavily subsidised.

My local dealer has huge 208 litre drums of the stuff in the workshop, I saw it through the MOT viewing window...

Yep that's the ones I have seen in the workshop on a trolley with pump, i really can't see them filling those back up with cheap oil.

Edit: In fact I know a guy that works in there I'll ask him now.

So great that for cheap servicing at not cheap prices Dealers use Quantum to VW 504/507,  5w 30 Full Synthetic Long Life.   Still nothing special.

If you are talking a 1.8 TSI as well forget Long Life crap even if made for the King of Saudi Arabia.   VW TSI's are better with VW 502 00. So 5w 40 FS will be lovely stuff.

As for the very very special now VW508/509 0w 20 FS LL.   Time will tell.

PS

@T2000   Who would believe VW Group would throw cheap engine parts in engines, consumables like plugs,  gearbox parts in gearboxes, brake and suspension parts.

Who  would ever think that after decades VW can still not source decent water pumps.

Oddly French Manufacturers recommend different oil specs, ones from Japan or South Korea something else.

Now when you look at the reliability of engines out of warranty it is German Manufacturers that are the worst.

What about    "VW Audi Skoda SEAT long life IV engine oil 508/509 0W-20 G052577M2"

is 508/509 the wrong spec?

Yes, very much wrong SPEC for a 1.8tsi!!! DO NOT USE!!

This oil spec shouldn't even be mentioned anywhere in the Superb II forum!

Expecting so many threads in a few years on VW going to VW508/509.

& Not good news threads

It's a 1600 diesel

You want VW507 so 5w 30 FS LL.   For Euro 5 or 6 TDIs.

VW Group went to VW508/509 for the WLTP Certification and started that early last year.  Not for older cars / engines.

Castrol edge to 504/507 then

Next time say you are hijacking the thread then, the thread is about a 1.8tsi. I am not a mind reader.

Still 508/509 is the wrong oil, use 507 spec oil.

Being a tad paranoid I bought 1ltr just to keep for top ups and put a wee dram in. ...

It's due a decent service in a few weeks

@lichfielddriver If you must or want to use Castrol or Quantum & it makes you feel good....

or just Oil to VW 504/507 from ASDA, Comma, or any seller.

Thread headline?

What's the best oil....

Cheers

Generally the answer is.

Oil of the correct spec and oil to the use & condition the vehicle will be used under.   Brands are something that can be argued over for ever.

ie,

Car commuting, car used as a Taxi, car used for track use.  Or maybe a car might do all of those things and more.
