Electric windows

Featured Replies

Hi I have an issue with my electric windows,on the drivers switch. When I press for the drivers window to go down,it comes up,and vice versa. The passenger side of the switch works fine. I thought it might be the switch so bought a new one,it does exactly the same!!  Any ideas??? Thanks

Sounds like the wires are the wrong way round. Can you give more info on the car... Have you just purchased it?  If not, did it always do this or just start doing it? Had the wiring in the door loom been repaired at any time?  Any extra info may offer more insight into this issue!

You may have read in other posts, these wiring looms do fracture frequently so I am wondering if they have been wired up the wrong way.

Sounds like that to me, repair gone wrong.........assuming it has always been like that since the op has owned the vehicle.

I've had the car for about 2months and it's always done this. I've looked at the wiring loom in the door jam, some have been repaired, but look ok,some wires have little splits on them,as I have problems with my mirrors as well,I feel this could be the cause

Looking at wiring diagrams abit more, there is only one feed to each switch, the opreation is controlled by the control unit on the motor, so its difficult to see "how" the window wires could be repaired wrong in all honesty. it would make sense if each switch did opposite window but thats not whats happening.

I suppose its "possible" they have been mixed up with another wire that feeds the mirrors and "somehow" it's working through that circuit, albeit incorrectly.

If it was me, I would purchase a new drivers door loom and go from there.

Thanks

Splits in the wires could potentially mean wires touching each other. Wires could have been repaired but not connected to the correct ones or drifted apart again. Close inspection id the key, here.

Now you have added in the mirror fault, I feel it is even more likely to be a wiring issue.

Are all wiring looms specific to each model? I've found three all for the same year/engine size, but all with different part numbers....

You just need one that covers your equipment, ie electric windows front only OR for front and rear and mirrors , central locking etc.

If you ring the dealer, give them your VRM they will tell you the part for your car, then you know  OR

The main numbers are all the same 5J0971120 its the letters after that denote equipment / model year specific, but a later one will fit an earlier car, as looms are updated they get a later suffix...

So you need to tell us Model Year

And what you have :-

LHD or RHD

Electric windows x (2 or 4)

Electric mirrors (yes / No)

Electric heated mirrors (yes / No)

Remote central locking (yes / No)

Both would do the job, but Im also pretty sure one from a later vehicle would also work.

Hi,

Forgive the intrusion, but will the part linked to above also do the job on drivers side on right hand drive?

With ours, we thought initially it was the switch for the power mirrors as we couldn't move them electrically. So I replaced switch to no avail, still can't move mirrors electrically though they do heat up, or at least the passenger side one does.

Now the central locking is playing up. All doors lock and unlock on fob key except drivers door, though if you insert key into door you can open and close all doors that way.

So my guess is its broken wires behind the door pillar and probably a new wiring loom required to fix both electric mirrors and central locking problem.

Thanks for any advice.

You have groken wires for definate, the reason you can "lock" with the key as that the mechanical part / linkage to the door lock is working, but the broken loom will stop the electrical side.

What year is your vehicle ??

Looking further, there is no LHD or RHD, the drivers door will fit either, that one is listed as drivers door "left" as it's european site.

I recently replaced mine as I retro fitted rear electric windows so I needed a different loom, my original is from a 2013 plate and is in perfect condition and is for vehicles with everything except rear electric windows, I cannot adverise on here so will probably ebay it, but looking for £40

Ours is an April 2012 vRS. I don't know if I'm brave enough to tackle replacing the wiring loom myself but I dare say I could get someone to do it. I may come back to you to buy your original harness but at the moment we're weighing up whether we are keeping the car or not as we do have concerns about other issues arising again in future. We do have replacement engine and it's a good one, we have replaced mechatronic and clutch packs. It's just that our confidence in the car has taken a bang.

Sorry, ours is 2012 and right hand drive, mk2 vrs. Electric and heated door mirrors, electric windows on front only, and remote central locking.

So I'm guessing one of the two parts listed above will be the correct one for ours but unsure of which one.  We are keeping car, change of circumstances made the decision altogether much easier.
